Here’s something to think about. I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive Lab tests, he said I was doing 'fairly well' for my age. (I just turned 78). A little concerned about that comment, I couldn't resist asking him, 'Do you think I'll live to be 100?' He asked, 'Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine or hard liquor?’ Oh no,' I replied. 'I'm not doing drugs, either!' Then he asked, 'Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?' ‘I said, 'Not much, my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!' 'Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?' ‘No, I don't,' I said. He asked, 'Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lots of sex?' ‘No,' I said. He looked at me and said, ‘Then, why do you even give a crap

sorry to hear that Jim. my Dad started smoking after joining in jan. of 41... it was the smokes in the c-rats that started his tobacco use...he was 20. he retired from the a.f. in 72 with 30 yrs. 9 months and 28 days of service... in 1977 when my son born, he and my mom quit smoking... at age 70 Dad started having breathing problems. he went the v.a. route... they took very good care of him... thru several meetings, dr. visits my Dad reached 100% disabled. by '04 he was barely getting by with the aide of my mom... on the O2 bottle 100% of the time... in nov. of 05, he passed. not form the copd, but from an infection that was running rammpent at Madigan med. center at ft lewis. I quit at age 42... im enjoying very good health at age 69... knock on wood...

Jim, I know what your going through. On Feb 16 2017 that morning I got up and fixed me a cup of coffee went in and sat down to drink my coffee and read the paper the next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital the next day with all kinds of tubes and iv needles sticking in and out of me .The doctor came around on his rounds and told me I had passed out because of low blood oxygen caused by mucus build up in my lungs , that was the cause of my passing out COPD acute bronchitis. Stayed in the hospital for ten days ,came home with a S--t load of meds four types of inhalers five types of pills.I am doing ok now that the VA took over my care,they supplied me with a hospital bed, oxygen supplies and a electric scooter to get around if I need to walk more than one hundred and fifty feet and any other needs that I may have in the future. Also ask my PCP if it would be any good to file a claim because the AF contributed to my COPD smoking, JP4 and just about any other chemical that aircraft maintainers are exposed to He told me that the VA stopped that as one of their clams as of January 1969 Take good care of your self cause I don`t want to be the only old sarge left on the forum.

I would get this a couple of times a year, and pass it off as sinus related. But this time, it came about after making a couple of large clocks and a table..... Jim, Sorry I haven't responded sooner. Sure hope you are doing better now. COPD is a terrible thing. I have been using Albuterol inhalers for over 15 years to help out. Mine started with allergies. I took allergy shots for 7 years, every other week. They helped, but I still need a few puffs before mowing lawn or being out in yard. I also take allergy pills every day. My COPD is very mild at this point, It's bad enough I get a Handicap Parking sign to hang in car window.
Sure hope your old ticker is still pumping good and will continue for years to come.

Lorin Thanks, Lorin.......... Some say that it took my retirement physical to determine that I actually had a heart  ..... Did some shop work on a clock yesterday. The dust masks I had were so old that the elastic stretched forever, could cross it behind my neck and bring the rest over my forehead so the mask fit tight. Hopefully, I will get use to wearing one. Damned if I want wear one of those forced air breathing helmets to make clocks. |
