5 Nov 2014 Message from BobskiHello F106 Troops, Ken Wigton has been doing a lot of work ironing out the F106 All Troops 2015 Reunion, Oct 7-11 in Colorado Springs details for our tour options. Here's some updates: 1. The Oct. 9 Evening Tour through Broadmoor and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo area with an after dark visit to Seven Falls: $48 P/P is limited to the first 50 people that pay for it. Only one bus as this one is a beautiful tour with some mountain roads included. Here's a link to Seven Falls: www.pikes-peak.com/attractions/seven-falls/ 2. Ken recommends that the folks at least pay their registration and tell us which events they are attending. This is very important to me as I track the counts and order the busses, guides and meals and must know in advance of the reunion and prefer it to be earlier than later. Please let everyone know that if they have any changes before the reunion that their money is fully refundable. I can take cancellations up until September 30, 2015. I will also take payments for each event separately if that helps people by spreading out the payment. 3. You can now start registering for the 2015 F-106 All Troops Reunion, Oct. 7-11, which is at the Elegante Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Reunion committee has decided against a Reunion Coin, but Pat P. and I were thinking maybe we might fund it ourselves and sell them. Thoughts on this coin design? It's a rendition of Dick's 2015 Reunion Patch on one side and our F-106 Website on the other. It will SELL!! Especially if you put it on Facebook!

In addition to the 2015 F-106 Reunion Challenge Coins that MOW is developing and the truckload of clocks built by the Old Sarge, here's a new contribution by Bear Bruhn with Jim's help.
Bear had found the picture below of 4 Fighter Interceptors flying over the AF Academy at Colorado Springs. The quality was degraded as it was a copy of the original lithograph. I sent the picture to Jim and he tracked down the original USAF photographer who took it back in the 60s, Ken Hackman. Ken sent Jim a high resolution .jpg file from the original slide which was much better quality and Jim will make a clock for it.
Here's a smaller version of the picture that meets the less than 1 meg requirement for posting. We'll send a full size 2 meg copy to MOW for the Main website. This is a great photo! There will be no shortage of great memorabilia available at the reunion!

The F-101, F-102 and F-106 are sporting the tail art from Air Defense Weapons Center at Tyndall. I was stationed there from May 67-Dec 70 after McGuire closed and moved most of birds to 95th at Dover. The F-104 was probably a Guard bird. Lorin

ANG/ADC mission for F-104 was over sometime 1962.... Perhaps it was borrowed from Luke AFB, (German AF training unit) because it appears to lack the radome of an interceptor.... Maybe Ken knows..... I will ask him.....

F-104 S/N 0-60882 or 56-0882 was F-104A Model and was transferred from USAF to MAP Taiwan in 8/1970. So it was still flying somewhere in USAF until then.

This is good info on the photo. I actually have it, albeit a crappy version I never uploaded, along with this one below from Marty Isham which I can only assume was taken at the same time frame. Now with the modified good copy of the photo and the photographers name I can update the ADWC Photo Gallery.

Looks like the MOW has another of Ken's photos, apparently on the same mission.. I had found out that the F-104 had been at Homestead, but I couldn't find anything beyond 1962...... Will have a clock made out of an 11 x 14 print that my daughter has made from Ken's photo that he emailed me......more confusion for me..... The long-delayed F-106 finally arrived in 1959, only a year after its interim F-104A had entered service. The ADC quickly passed its F-104As and Bs to the Air National Guard but took them back during a series of crises in the early 1960s. It continued to use F-104As and Bs sparingly until 1969, when it passed them to the ANG for good. F-104Cs and Ds saw some combat in Vietnam until F-4 Phantom IIs replaced them. The Tactical Air Command sent its last F-104C to the ANG by 1968. In general, F-104 service was mostly a footnote in the histories of the Air Force and the Air National Guard, which flew their last Starfighters in 1975. - See more at: www.pacificaviationmuseum.org/pearl-harbor-blog/lockheed-f-104-starfighter#sthash.qRf00gbK.dpuf

This from Ken concerning the MOW's photo: This Looks like the same photo. I think this was probably shot sometime in 1967. I have to search through my files to narrow down the time of year. The motivation behind the photo was; these 4 aircraft were the fighter aircraft in use in ADC at that time. They obviously brought them in for the photo since none, that I know of, were stationed at Colorado Springs. I spent most of 1967 traveling throughout the U.S., Korea, England, Scotland, Greenland, Newfoundland photographing ADC facilities, aircraft, etc. The F-106s deployed to Korea on a six month basis. I shot them there and then flew backseat with them to Guam as they were deploying back to the states. Four hours in an F-106! My most fervent memory is; how tired and sore my butt was when we finally got to Guam. Ah the good old days! Ken
More from Ken: Jim,
Saw the other message first You may be right about the reason for the photo. I'm not sure, as one of the other corresponder wrote it looks awfully brown down on the ground and in June at graduation the ground should be green. I think the F-104 was still assigned to ADC. Earlier during my photo essay tour of ADC I photographed F-104s stationed at McDill AFB. Was my one and only time I got to fly backseat in their two seat F-104. Quite an experience. So I'm sure they were still assigned to ADC.
Ken
