Gene, here is a pic I took of some C-130's with my 110 kodak camera. You can barely see Mt. Rainer in the background. The camera's and film you had at the base photo lab I bet took great photos. As for the age thing. I'm only 3 years behind you. looks like beindhoa has us both may a good many years.

Gene , Went down to WPB this past weekend to visit my daughter. You would never believe how much it has changed. The base is completely gone. in its place is an ultra modern international airport, and the traffic is bumper to bumper snow birds. No way I would live in that part of Florida. Where you used to live was only three or four blocks from the base back then now its a big housing development. : :

the shots i got of the mass taxi werenot when they left for good... that formation had something to do with a large op. i used many film sizes in the lab... i used a 4X5 view camera for them ( the 130 formation) (the larger the negitive, the larger the print) i used a 120 size, 2 1/4X2 3/4 format for the shot of E ramp... i used a 35mm for the weapons loading shots... i always tried to get mt. rainier in the shot somehow... th a.f. gave us nikons which was the best 35mm at the time....but very expensive...the lense i used in my selfportrait was $1500.00 in 1975 dollars.

I worked SAC for several years at Griffiss AFB, NY. Always loved watching and hearing the 49th FIS F-106's fly by. Gene you mention: You ever see a SAC Military Interval Take Off (MITO) when they are using water injection? That is something to see. i wish I would have gotten a picture of one. I've scanned the internet but never found a photo of one. B-52 leaving Griffis AFB

When I was at the Goose in 1959-1960, we would watch the Elephant Walk. The horn would blow and all the KC97s would start up and then get in a long line down the ramp extending to the end of the main runway. They would sit there and, when the word was given, head down the runway with all six engines blasting snow. It wasn't often that they would actually take off. Usually they would rev up and go about a fourth of the way down the runway, throttle back on the big fans and shut down the jets and taxi back in. When they did take off, it was quite a sight from the ADC ramp and the alert hanger, as we could see them getting in to the air. Man, did those 4360 engines smoke. The J47s under each wing also put out quite a bit of smoke. The environmentalists would have had fits if they had seen them. It was also quite a noisy exercise. If you can, imagine a wing of KC97s lined up and ready for takeoff with all those four-bladed props beating the air and then the jets making their whines. We didn't get too many complaints about the burners on our Scorpions after an Elephant Walk. :god_bless_usa

MITOs! Do I remember them. I lived 2 miles off the runway near Lake Delta in Rome (Griffiss). As a kid I remember the events of MITOs. The noise was deafening and actually shook our house. I would always run outside and watch. I would say they were a heavy influence in me joining the USAF (Thank God I god ADC!). Somewhere I have old 8mm movies of MITOs at The Griff from the 50's early sixites. I'll have to dig sometime and see about converting them.

That's where they take off nose up, isn't it? I saw quite a few of those at the Griff, along with a LOT of elephant walks. :

Lots of Elephant walks, what a sight to see. The smoke hung in the air for 20 to 30 minutes after they all got off the ground. I 'll never forget one time we were watching them take off and a BUFF ate a bird during take off roll and kept going the pilot standing next to me just said " Nice to have all them engines, eat a bird and keep on going, I would have to punch out if it happened to me on take off!!" (Yep he was a "6" driver)

This is the only pic I have of the B-52 Ramp. Its not one I took. Got it off the internet. Good view of the area. The alert area would be """Right"""" and out of the photo.

This is one of the best OV-10 Bronco pictures I have ever seen. Photo was taken near Sembach Air Base, West Germany. I flew around with them so I know the area and countryside. This photo was on the back cover of an Airmans magazine many years ago. Once you figure this PhotoBucket it is a snap.

USAF Photo. Saw this sweet OV-10 photo. Aircraft is over West Germany. The aft co-pilots seat is empty. That almost never happened when I was there. I had that view very often during my many flights over Germany. By the looks of the picture the aircraft is above the Rhineland-Pfalz area miles west of Sembach AB. The major autoban in view on the valley flats is likely E50/Hwy46 that joins E451/Hwy47 that goes up to Frankfurt. I've driven them both many times. Bad Durkheim is directly south maybe 50 miles along the mountians where I went to the local October-fest a few times. Damn, I miss them years of back seat flying over Germany. Lots of family drama back then, but all the flights helped relieve my tension and stress. I plan on taking my wife Belinda back to Germany when she retires in about 2 1/2 years. Space-A C-17 right into Dover AFB, DE. or McGuire AFB, NJ and then onto Ramstein, Germany.

img41.imageshack.us/my.php?image=frankensteincastleonhil.jpgWell $hit what's the problem now? [/IMG] [/IMG] Well got it to work after 2nd time selecting forum. See if it works next time. I still think I need a reformat. Anyway the sign picture explains itself. I stumbled onto that sign during a winters drive in 1978. I made a mental note of its location and visited with the native village folks and they said the castle ruins were up on the hill. Year or two later during one of my flights I asked the pilot to over fly it so I could take a picture. He did and that be the photo. The castle ruins is on the hill infront of the prop spinner. note the railroad tracks going through a tunnel under the hill and castle. I've looked it up on goggle maps and it is still the same.
