Tomorrow, Bill finishes his 3rd week of treatments. He continues to do well with no side effects, but he's noticeably weaker and more frail. His hair has started to fall out over the past few days. Thursday we meet with his oncologist at the Mayo Clinic for the mid-way assessment of his progress. Yesterday he was having a good morning so our family all got ready and took him to church for the first time in 2 months. What a welcome we got!!! People stood in line to give us hugs and well wishes. There were a lot of tears all around. When our pastor first came by our house after we received news of Bill's diagnosis, I told him that I kept thinking about the song, "Where Could I Go But to the Lord?" That's what has sustained me and kept me going. Anyway, he and 2 others got up in front of the church, sang that song and dedicated it to Bill. I couldn't help but cry. God is so good, I don't know what we'd do without Him. Please let the others know . Thanks. Judy

Hey Guys, Let's add Erv and Sandy Smalley to our prayer lists. Sandy just completed abdominal surgery and is recovering to begin a double round of chemo. Erv just finished his 2nd round of chemo and goes back to the doc shortly for a recheck. All of us know that the care giver in the family has a tough time like the patient does. Compound that when both are patients and care givers at the same time! Erv and Sandy, our thoughts and prayers are with you and with the docs and other folks who are working to get you healed. Pat P.

Duy, I will be praying for you, your wife and daughter and the eye docs at Madigan.
Hope the vision clears without any other problems.
Lay low, and don't let us "Conservatives" give you any stress.

I never expected to find myself posting here as one of the "fallen" but I guess nobody ever does! Actually I AM still upright and walking about! Anyway, here is my bizarre story: About 10 pm thurday night I was watching TV, got up and went to the kitchen to get a bag of chips, sat back down in my chair, and discovered I had lost the vision in my left eye! After a short period of trying to figure out what was going on, I got a ride down to the Madigan Army Hospital ER. Since it was only Thursday night, casualties were light, and I got in quick. An eye doctor was on duty, but he called in a more experienced one from home. There is no pain associated with this at all. They saw something floating around inside, and I got appointment to opthomology the following after noon, and a regular doctor for a check up in the AM. Although there are gripes about military hospital facilities, appointments, etc, one advantage is there are a lot of doctors there if you need one bad. I had 3 eye doctors looking at me and conferring, and had every type of eye test in the inventory. I was worried it was an "eye stroke" permanent & untreatable; or a detached retina--an operation. Although it looked somewhat different and unusual from the normal case of this kind (I am different and unusual) consensus was a vein inside my eye got clogged and burst inside, and the blood covered the cells preventing the light from hitting them. It made sense as in the very beginning as I moved about my vision would change randomly. Prognosis is, if they all are correct, the eye will eventually heal itself, and I got to get a shot in the eyeball every week for an unknown period of time. I can still see clearly but dimly out of my far left peripheral vision so don't think you can sneak up on me! I may not know who's comin' but i can still duck! As for the rest, I can dimly see bright light for instance a white rectangle of light which is the computer monitor, and at night I am totally blacked out. Here in Washington it is legal to drive with only one eye that has a minimum 20/40 corrected, but driving in traffic is pretty dangerous with no depth perception especially, so it is pretty inconvenient as my wife is unable to drive for medical reasons. A daughter has moved into the house to help us out. I have one good 20/20 corrected eye remaining, can read well, but the fear is that it might blow out as well before I finish this posting! I am on total no exertion for the duration. If I need that bag of chips, someone else better get it for me! In the hopefully unlikely event that the other eye should suddenly blow out as well, someone will post here for me under my name letting everyone know. The other eye got the same tests & scrutiny--looks OK so far. In the meantime, all of my "Planned Activities" for the near future are still "GO"! Hey duy, I sent your post to my sister - she had a similar thing happen. Here's her reply: "Yes - pretty much as he describes it - same thing happened to me it lasted for approx 3 1/2 weeks - 4 Dr's didn't have a clue after several "test" and examinations Remember that it was right after I had done some heavy lifting that had caused much shoulder pain - the eye was NO pain - just lost visual acuity - just a big blur out of that eye - we were thinking it was the same strain that had caused the shoulder pain that may have "burst a vessel in the eye" anyway - call it proper healing time - or the prayer I said the night before - but I woke up one morning and Voila - had my vision back to what is was before. I will say that I have read in my recent research that aspartame can cause such sudden loss of vision! * hence I now no longer ingest anything with aspartame !! Gave up diet Pepsi!! sis" Hope this helps, Pat P. :teacher

Belinda and i will be praying for you and we will put you on our church's prayer chain. You need rest and relaxing. So take it easy and wait on the eye to get better.
Its great that this seems to be something that will heal-up by itself. hope its quicker than the 3 1/2 weeks that Pat 's sister had to wait.
