Joined CA ANG 01-1957, went to A/C mechanic's school at Amarillo TX 1957, F-84 and F-86. 2 years in CA ANG working in Hyd Shop forgot the 30 afsc. Joined Reg AF in Jan 1959 sent to Castle in 456th, worked in the dock on the F-102 and F-106, went to Geiger for F-106 training and when I got back went to the flight line as a F-106 crew chief #80760 at the time I was a 19 year old Airman 2nd! Went to Goose AFB Canada 1961 Crew chief on an F-102 for 6 months then to Alert for a year. Back to Beale where they sent me to SAC, that ended it. 1 1/2 years on transit alert and I cashed it in. My intention was 20 but I could not stand SAC. If you weren't on bombers you weren't **it. and they backed it up with no stripes for fighter types. Kudos for the lucky guys that got to work on all the post Century Series fighters.

42330/50 a/c electrician 17th Bomb Wing WPAFB on Buff H Models and A Model Tankers. Assigned to AGE as the resident spark chaser. Got bored, stupid, and busted to E-1. Volunteered for overseas tour to get gone from SAC. 72-73 42350 electrician assigned to 1868 Flt Check Sq. at Wiesbaden, Germany, 2 T-39s. Great Job! Discovered the real AF. Squadron got closed down and I got sent to Griffiss. Had my two stripes back!! 73-75 42350 electrician on afternoons in Electric Shop. Had a good time. POMO came and I became an augmentee nose picker. I was assigned to Midnights on the line. Did lox and drag bags, tow and mechanical leftovers from evenings. Learned how to be a mechanic. Loved it!! 75-78 Worked for the OSI from 78-80 and got out in 81. If I could of stayed in a/c mx, I would have gone till retirement. Got out in 81 and ran to the closest airport and got a job. I'm still working on planes. They're bigger, and more complex, BUT nothing is as pretty as a 106! DJ

dnbeven,,,That is some full career you have posted. congrats! :salute I spent time at Sembach Air Base, West Germany which is not far from Kaiserslauten. I have a daughter and her husband serving at Dover AFB and they hate it along with many of their co-workers. When were you in Germany and at Dover? What year did you retire?

Bullhunter, Thank you for your kind words. I worked weapons release at Spangdalhem on F-4s in 77 to 79. That was fun!
I was a USFPS town patrol cop from 83 to 90. Sembach AB, Ramstein AB, Einsederholf and Kapaun Air Stations as well as Danner, Panzer, Kleber Kaserns and Laundsthul Army Hospital were in our jurisdiction. We patrolled over 360 square miles and we were busy. We worked directly with the German and French police and it was a blast. I was also at the air show crash in 88 at Ramstein AB. That was difficult.
I retired in 04 from Dover AFB. Yes, all warriors hate Dover, especially those of us who grew up in fighters (ADC/TAC/SAC/ACC, etc.)!!! Yes, I had to include SAC!
Having said that, I did have the HONOR of driving the remains of our fallen comrades from the aircraft to the mortuary at Dover AFB. I don't know if they still complete the task, but when I was there only First Sergeants drove the transfer vehicles. I never really shed a tear much, but I remember one night when they opened the tail and there must have been over twenty metal transfer caskets draped with our flag. The scene shocked me, I can't even begin to explain how I felt. As I stood at attention, it took everything I had to fight back the tears.
Four of us prepared to lift a flag draped casket from the van to the holding area, we prepared for a normal heavy lift, however this one must have only weighted 30 pounds. It was all that remained of a brave soldier. I've watched them prepare a closed casket. It hurt me that a family will never be able to see their loved one again. I don't know, perhaps it is better they remember him/her as they were.
The men and women who work at the mortuary do so with the utmost respect and dignity for those who gave their all. I had been through the mortuary many times and I can not give enough thanks and praise to those outstanding men and women who do a task few would or even could do. God bless them all!

I was at sembach AB 1978-82. Had a great time there. Went to the Alps twice. TDY to almost all countries in Europe. Lots of flight time over Europe in OV-10's.
Did you know a Paul Becker at Spangdalhem, in the jet engine section?
You left Dover about or just before my daughter and her husband got assigned there.
I retired in 1995 after 24yrs.

Graham,
Welcome aboard! I also enlisted in Oakland, but in June of '63. I was assigned to the 27th FIS '64 - '67 so we didn't cross paths there. We're about the same age (I was born in '46) so if you're from around Oakland we might have crossed paths some where.
