Well, I got another display Six checked off my list to see this past weekend. I took off Saturday night after work, made it to just outside Vicksburg, MS, then got to Tyndall around 2:30 p.m. Sunday to pick my son up. He's been staying there with a friend for the past few months. (Long story.) We got back to Abilene a couple hours ago. (Geez, what a trip.) Anyway, I just had to stop to get some photos of the Six. I was a bit disappointed with its current condition, but hey, it's a "save" right. That aircraft has a lot of potential for a decent ADWC paint job, but I figure at a minumum someone could fix the tail number! Just so you know it was really me there, here's a couple shots with the big red truck, and me in the photos!

Probably how 59-0145 looked before they stripped, and put her on display. (Found on the internet somewhere, some time ago. This ought to go on the 59-0145 page Pat M.) Compare this to how she was painted, then re-painted since becoming a display. Also notice the original TAC badge on the tail has since been changed to an Air Defense Command badge. (Yes, AIR, not Aerospace.) That's cool, but if I had any say so, or ability, I would have it painted with the full-blown ADWC markings. Kind of like this...

Thanks for the great picture of the AF/M32A-13. AGE Puke, Jim I was wondering about that. Was that the one with the powered drive? (That looks like a differential on the rear axle.) Someone told me about those when I was in maintenance, but they were out of the system by the time I arrived. From the old-timers I talked to that used them I was told they could be more trouble than they were worth, but it was a neat feature. Having pushed-and-pulled my share of -86's, -95's, and the like I can understand how a powered drive would help. Thoughts?

yeah...something sticks in the driveline and it drives itself into the a/c... took a few photos of different age equipt. vs. aircraft... the safety office always won... love the photos...

Yep, it made it easier to move that big, yellow box around.
Of course, first you had to be able to get the engine started.
Then make sure all the cables were off the ground, and, not hooked up to the airplane.
If the ramp was icy, and seeing bases where most of the interceptors were stationed were susceptible to ice, good luck.
It might move on the dry stuff, then spin on the ice, turning who knows where.
Or, and this happened more than once, some hapless maintainer, was walking along, the cart following behind, when he stepped on a patch of ice, went down and had to scramble to keep from getting run over before the handle went up and the brake applied.
So, safest way, Use a Tug.
We only had the electric units in the hanger, as we didn't want to have to wear ear protection while working with power on.
Let alone all the Carbon Monoxide mixing with the JP-4 in the drip barrels.

Most self propulsion systems were disabled for safety reasons. Exceptions were -60s and MD-3s both of which could be scary.

By the time I retired, that MD-3 was over 40 years old, and its big brother the C-26 wasn't far behind. Inever knew of any problems, unless it was some one horsing around.. What was the Gigantic thing that was about 7' tall,2' wide and over 8" long? ? We had them at Griffiss with 94. don't remember if it was compatable with the deuce

That was an A-7. DC only with a Chrysler Firedome V-8 engine. The MD-3s ended to lunge at you (speed switches stuck).

We used them big, tall, yellow things at the Alert Hanger when I was at The SCAB.
They really were a good fit behind the wings of our Saber Dogs and Ls.
They had a big Chrysler V8, that burned regular, leaded, gas.
We had a gas supply behind the hanger to keep them refueled, along with our blue pickup.
They were not easy to move, especially on a wet or icy ramp.
So, the Alert Barn got them.
I never saw one used on a Deuce, but did on Scorpions and lots of other "older" airplanes.
Definitely had to watch your speed when towing, as they had a very narrow tread width.

A couple more from Tyndall I took back on July 15, 2012... ;D Ugh. That tail number drives me crazy every time I look at it. Wish I had some pull to get someone there to paint it on correctly.

Great to see one I worked many times at 48th FIS. Go to the William Tell page and click on 1978. There you will see pics of 145 sporting its Tazlanglian Devil (TAZ) logo on the radar door. One of them has the artist/aircrew in the cockpit...then Capt. D.Stultz. :2thumbsup
