OK Kilroy! Whats your date of SSGT? I'm not OLD! Just startin to get "Fussy in my ways" and a mite picky in somethings, like my beer, (Two varieties are always best!!! FREE and COLD!). I was promoted to SSGT on 1 March, 1971. I KNOW there are a LOT of "Old GEEZERS" out there that can make my date of rank look like the END of their career! They have more time in a CHOW line than I had in the Air Force! Sorry guys! Please forgive me??? I'll buy the first round! MArv GEEZER is for old farts ;D ;D the Old Sarge

Well I'm OLD!!! I'm so old I remember replacing tubes in my television! I'm so old I remember CONELRAD.
Age is just mind over matter. I don't mind, so it don't matter.
Incidently, I celebrated my 50th birthday by seeing The Fellowship of the Ring. Ironic, eh?
SSgt was about as far as I got, and I got it in July of 1974. I had a line number for TSgt in 1977 but I got discharged before the orders got cut.

Made Staff on June 1st, 1972. Discharged on June 15th 1972. Sometimes Uncle Sam is not too smart, that promotion cost the government 87 days of leave pay at Staff rather than SGT, plus travel pay for 1200 miles & paying to move furniture. Good deal for me !!!

Well guys and gals, I hate to admit this . I was promoted to SSGT in March 1952. By making SSGT at that time I did not have to request permission from the Commander to marry my lovely bride of 52 years in May 1952. Time is only a figure of speech. It is what you do with the time that becomes important. Enjoy reading all the stories. Keep up the good work and keep the Irishman busy so he don't complain like an old soldier.

OK Everyone!!! I totally agree with Kilroy! ANYONE who put up with 20 plus years deserves and can live with the title "OLD SARGE"!!! Even a few of the youngsters these days can take that title as well. Though not ALL! There are STILL quite a few E-6, E-7, E-8, E-9's out there and not NCOS! Sorry guys I still get very HOT when I think of this topic! I do respect ALL of you guys that have posted your Date of RANK! Just would like to see and hear from more! I still think of the White haired "ol SSGT" that I met at Hamilton, when I first got there, Dec 1972. HE was OLD!!! He started out in the Army Air Corps working on "The Jug" as he called it! HE had some stories to tell that kept ME in awe for days! I'll not let anyone of you down as long as I live. I will maintain the moniker of "Old Sarge" with pride! I know there are a few younger guys who looked up to me as I did the likes of you! Salute! And a Beer for you all! MArv

Yes MArv, I agree with you concerning NCOs and e-5 thru e-9 (lower case e is deliberate)and I found this out when teaching NCO prep school and NCO Academy, and did my best to weed them out.......Now let me tell you a tale about an OLD SARGE of the highest caliber.....It is '53 at George AFB-----The SARGE was a MSgt line chief in the 416th Ftr Bmbr Sqdn, and I had been assigned to the wash rack to strip the paint off our 86s ( for repainting) for 2 days. Well Monday AM, he told me to go back down to the wash rack again---now me being the docile individual that I am, went thru the ritual of, Sarge,I've already ruined 2 pairs of fatiques, brogans are shot and I've got burns from the paint remover-etc.. He asked me if I was refusing, and I said yes I was...... Well, he hit me twice before I hit the ground-with the same hand!!!!!!!! He looked down at me and asked "Amn Gier, have we reached an understanding?" Rubbing my jaw,I replied,"Yes Sarge, I do believe we have." He reached down and grabbed me by my fatiques, lifted me up and said "lets go get some coffee" Now I thought we were going to the line shack- nope, we walked out the gate and went to the NCO CLUB!!!!! He told me that the reason he wanted me to go back, was that not only had I done the job right, but I had cleaned up at the end of the day....He also regaled me with many words of advice regarding an AF career that stood me in good stead over the next 25 yrs.....After that, I was the beneficiary of many good deals, including promotion to A/2c and early promotion to A/1c (not Sr Amn or sgt)..MSgt Dewey Savell had 24 yrs at that time and retired when we went to France........Yes MArv, there is a difference He passed away about 12 yrs ago, and I still thank him for his infuence

Sgt Gier was the DD form 345 by chance be the old class A pass ???Also i remember the old brown rough out brogans. they made us dye them black burnish them and try to spit shine them, notice i said try. I also agree with marv. I saw more than one get out because they could not get past ssgt, most of them were darn good mechanics. I remember a MARS ssgt with fifteen years in grade, he finely made tsgt and retired. Kilroy

OLD SARGE- Ye be right- the DD 345 was the class A Pass- U.S. ARMED FORCES LIBERTY Pass, also doubled as a Mess Pass....Don't know why, but I saved several of them- including one that was printed in French on the reverse side.... My experience with the rough outs was the cloting sales store had them on sale for about a buck and half a pair - got them right after the wash rack episode in my previous post---Never did get them to shine............Anybody tell me about the A/C Maintainers badge I see people wearing at DM Understand you have to have 14 years in the career fields......... What badge do the orderly room troops wear WHOOPS, I meant Admin Specalists ;D ;D ;D

Sgt Gier I think as a E7,8,orE9 all you need is five years in the career field and a seven level to wear the master maintenance badge. I know the maint badge is issued after completion of tech school now. :-*KILROY

Yep, maintenance badge is awarded at completion of tech school. 7-level badge (with star, what I wear) is awarded when you get your 7-level. Gotta be at least a Staff Sgt for that one. E-7s and above as stated above wear the wreath and star (9-level badge) with 5 years experience in the field. So, most guys put on the 9-level badge the day they sew on Master.
Now I know I can't beat any of you guys for those "old" sew-on dates for Staff but here's my story. Made E-5 in the US Army in September 1986. Transferred to the Air Nat'l Guard as a Staff (E-5) in March 2000 so my DOR changed to that date. Went active USAF March 2003 as a Staff and, you guessed it, that's my new DOR! 21 years for pay and only 16 months time in grade! The earliest I can get promoted to Tech is August 2005 and I'll have 19 years as an E-5 in the Active Army, Army Guard, Army Reserve, Air Guard and Active Air Force!
Bottom line, the "kids" I work with call me the old sarge! To them I am!
Mark
