Hi all, Joe Sylvia, retired Convair F-106 Tech Rep sent the following email Pat, maybe you could send this to Pat McGee and he could post it somewhere. Some people who don’t have a model may want to order it. Being a novice at this computer business I don’t understand how to maneuver around this Internet. I’m having fun anyhow! Cheers, Joe Thanks Joe! This 1/72 scale die-cast Spirit of '76 F-106 would make a very nice addition to any modelers collection. See the bottom of the page for websites to stores that carry the model nationwide. Pat P. Sure, I'll add it to the RC and Modeler's page www.f-106deltadart.com/models.htm

Mark, Many Thanks for all the research you do for modelers! Thanks to your links I rediscovered the '66-'68 tail flash decals for the 456th FIS that I helped design with the then CO, Col Bill Jackson. One of our Forum members Doug Barbier hooked me up with a decal designer for models (whose name I'll have to research). Revell had just announced plans to do a kit run of 5000 units of the 1/48 scale F-106 and this designer created a set of decals to commemorate the 456th FIS display at Castle Air Museum. www.ebay.com/itm/F-106-Delta-Dart-456-FIS-1-48-decals-Superscale-481020-/390533517734?pt=Model_Kit_US&hash=item5aed9c91a6Man, these designer guys are serious about detail. I sent him pics of the Castle 456th display and he created decals that were very accurate. I don't know how many sets he sold when that Revell model came out but I hope he made a profit from our 456th FIS guys. When we dedicated the 456th display at CAM in 2003 it was painted in the colors from July 1968 when the squadron was transferred to Oxnard, AFB, CA to the 437th FIS and 30 days later to the 460th FIS. Lt Col John Marcotte was the CO then and flew aircraft 57-2456. His name was on the nose wheel door along with crew chief Steve Keesey and MA-1 crew chief Herb Koss. There was not a dry eye in the crowd on that dedication day. And those names are on the 456th decal set for the nose wheel door. In 2001 MOW helped us raise the 40 grand to get a F-106 at CAM. Through this forum I met guys like Jim Gier who built so many F-106 clocks to save Sixes, I can't count them all. And Erv Smalley and Marty Isham who are the historians of ADC and the F-106. And Bear Bruhn who helped us raise funds for CAM. And that's why we adopted them as honorary members of the 456th FIS. MOW also helped build Castle Air Museum when the base was shut down in 1995. Makes me proud to be a member of this forum! Pat P.

thankyou for the info Mark, the decals are on the way! Also thanks for all you do in the site It's my pleasure! Okay now, which ones did you get? Please say you sprung for the Superscale version. They have the ADC markings, and the Expert's Choice has TAC!

Mark, bout time I reply, yup I sprung for the super scale one which have ADC markings. Been getting the Decals on but sometimes I'm all thumbs but it's turning out OK. BTW, does anyone know of 5TH FIS decal set with the early markings? Been searching with no luck.

The decals you are now looking for are Eagle Strike #48219 - "The SIX, Part 4, Convair F-106 Delta Dart." They have the "early", May 1974, 5th FIS markings for 57-0237. That's the one with the red, yellow, and blue command stripes. It also includes 1972 markings of 59-0011 from the 460th FIS while assigned to Grand Forks AFB. I did find that they are in stock for $8.99 here... store.spruebrothers.com/product_p/eag48219.htm

thanks again Mark, plan on building another 106 with the old markings. Does anyone out there know a pilots name i could put on the 106 which is is made with the later markings, 1972? According to info from the 1983 5th reunion book, Col. Joseph Phinney was the Squadron Commander at the time. does that sound OK or does anyone else have a pilot's name?

one more thing I forgot, In the Super Scale decal set #48-1007, the are 2 yellow stripes which go on the belly of the plane just ahead of the missle bay. There is no bottom view so just exactly where are they placed?

Look under the star and bars on the photo. modelingmadness.com/scott/decals/super/48th/ss481007.htmI'll try to get you a better scan if you need it.

Those two yellow stripes on the belly forward of the missile bay doors could be caution indicators for the hinged door that was really heavy. I don't remember the name designation of that access door. Pat P.

That hinged door would be the 05 hole. In there was the Directional Gyro, Compass Adapter, Amplifier, Stable Table for MA1, Rate of trun gyro, and possibly some other equipment. Of course that was all before AHRS modification.

In early days it also had the 149, remote RADAR scope recorder on the door itself. The dehydrator units (2) were also in the 05 area. Dried the RADAR waveguide pressurized air supply. All of the Automatic Flight control units were on left side, stable table units on right side and of course stable table in center forward of door. I had all the cartilages removed from my left knee when I was 35 due to all pressure on knee from raising and lowering the 05 door and removing/reinstalling the coffin rack on B models so they could do Heat Exchanger Work..

Sorry Jim - but the forward jack point was forward of the Nose wheel well. It was almost directly below the IR head and the point where the cockpit forward wind screen blended into the upper fuselage. Actually it was by the lower right side of the RADAR door. As for opening the 05 door, I found that by getting in a bent over-crouched position I could hold the door with my shoulder and then unscrew the last two camlocks. I would let he door come to rest n my shoulder then move outboard and let the dood come down against me - SLOWLY! In the end of the proram, the 05 door was entirely devoid of anything attached to it other than the internal UHF antenna. You could hold it with one hand to open and close. Just had to get that first camlock into position right away. MArv
