FYI, delta6actual and I will soon be collaborating together on a Voodoo website. He'll do most of the research and data gathering, and I'll host the site, build it and maintain it. We plan on modeling the site similar to the F-106 site with some of the same type of features and look, but different colors, graphics etc so it is familiar to our visitors yet still unique Voodoo. What do all think about that idea? Pat McGee & delta6actual, A Voodoo web site sounds great. I've always wanted to see a Century Series web site but Darts and Voodoos are a great start in that direction. Here are some pictures sent by Lani Duquette and Lee Nellist for the F-101 ReDo the VooDoo project. please use any of these shots or links as you wish on your Voodoo site. Pat P. click each picture to see a slide show These 2 albums are of the Joint 62nd and 87th FIS Spike & Red Bull Reunion These guys did a fantastic job on the F-106 and F-101 projects and the Joint Reunion. It's very sad that the KI Sawyer Museum will close. :us_flag

There are a lot of little snippets about the F-101 that say it carried 6 Falcons. Not So!!!! Never did. Except for when it did

Wow, where did you find that!!! Looks like it has 2 on one side and 3 on the other. I think the side with 3 is the side that carried the Genies. It must be an early pic, or possibly the one F-101C that was modified to carry the B model armament. Great pic though, I stand corrected! :

The B model was originally intened to carry 6 Falcon missiles.
I don't know how many of those made it in to service.
A mod to put two Genies on one side
Don't know when all that took place, but the Bs I worked on all had Genies.

It must be an early pic, or possibly the one F-101C that was modified to carry the B model armament. Great pic though, I stand corrected! It's got three on one side, three on the other. The three on the "external" side are semi-submerged and mounted on extendable rails for firing, you can make out that the center missile actually overlaps the outer two and would therefore have to be fired first. The three on the "internal" side are mounted on rail launchers and do not retract; being carried internally there was no need for it. This lasted for about five minutes, figuratively speaking. It was the original weapons configuration for the F-101B. Late production F-101B/F airframes featured AIR-2 capability and the new pallet from the outset. In 1961 early production interceptor Voodoos were modified with AIR-2 capability, and the new weapons pallet. The new pallet could fit two AIM-4s on the "external" side and two AIR-2s on the "internal" side, although once security restrictions were relaxed a bit you saw the Genies carried as the external load quite often. Some sources like to claim that the Voodoo could still carry four Falcons as an alternate load, but this is not true. The idea would be that you could fit two Falcons in place of the two Genies, but the weapons pallet did not have the ability to mount the AIM-4 on the AIR-2 side. Also, when fitted with the modified pallet, the six Falcon loadout as no longer an option either. Remember, the Voodoo featured what was basically a modified version of the F-102's fire control system, explaining the initial lack of AIR-2 capability. In 1956 the idea of six Falcons as one load and two Falcons/two Genies as another load was already planned, but they didn't require initial production airframes to have the Genie capability. It also took a short while to get the GAR-1D/AIM-4A high-altitude Falcon incorporated into the FCS, which is why many early prototypes are seen carrying GAR-1 models like in the image I posted above.

McDONNELL F-101 VOODOO... One-O-Wonder is about ready for public viewing. The content of photo's is pretty small at the moment. delta6actual and I are the admins of the site and I know he will have lots of stuff to upload. I also created a user account without admin rights that you all can use to upload photo's. But rather than post here in the open, just send me an email or PM and I'll send it to you. It's not like it's a restricted site or a big secret, just want to keep the spammers away. Drop me a line mcgeepj2@hotmail.com or send me a PM

Good stuff. I see a lot of new photos and patches out there, good stuff.
For any airframe I don't know, or you don't know the model # for I create that UNKNOWN MODELS page. If anyone knows what a particular photo is in that page please leave a comment and I can update/move the photo to the right page.

From: Lani Duquette Sent: Tuesday, December 21, 2010 10:12 PM To: Jim G Subject: Re: voodoo site Great to hear from you Jim! First of all .....did I ever thank you for the coins you gave to Lee Nellist to give to me? I apologize strongly if I didn't. They were terrific and that you for thinking about me. Now on to business...Where did this wonderful item come from? Now I'm fired up! The best of two worlds, the Delta Dart and the Voodoo! Boy can I add some things to this site. I'm an old 62nd FIS guy you know! Get back to me and tell me how to get things to you and what you want for the site. MAN! I'm fired up! We've also got some great things happening with our museum too. The county wants us to look at a couple of buildings THEY own and control. Marquette County likes us. Good afternoon! I am new to this forum, and very glad to be aboard! I have been spending a lot of time in recent weeks researching the armament of the F-101B and how it evolved during its design and development. I still have a lot more questions than answers, but here is a thumbnail of what I've dug up: ?mid-1954: MAC design study of interceptor developed from F-101A. Drawing has retractable 3 x GAR launcher and clamshell doors containing what appear to be 108 FFAR tubes. However, at about this time, ADC had settled on a 6 x GAR configuration for the F-89D and F-102A, so I think that shortly after the date of this drawing, the decision was made to fit the same armament to the F-101B. March 1955: DoD authorizes full-scale development of MB-1. September 15 1955: Mockup inspection of F-101B. AF requests changes to armament rack. I infer that the requested change was from the 6 x GAR configuration to a GAR/MB-1 configuration. Early 1956: Loading tests of MB-1 on modified F-102A. F-101A 53-2426 modified with rotary door mechanism and begins flight testing of dummy weapons loads for F-101B. Configuration is 3 x GAR and 2 x MB-1. One photo published in Flight magazine in May 1956 shows 3 x GAR configuration along with 2 x six-tube rocket launchers on either side of Falcons March 1957: First flight of NF-101B, 56-232, with 6 x GAR fit. September 1958: Standard Aircraft Characteristics for F-101B lists 2 x GAR/2 x MB-1 as primary armament, 6 x GAR as alternate armament. Outside of the same film footage that "Soc" has posted, I have not corresponded with anyone who has seen or worked around an operational F-101B with the six- Falcon configuration. Fall 1958: MB-1 firing tests from F-101B 56-236, which served as the main armament testbed for the F-101B program. I have more extensive notes that I've compiled on PowerPoint that I will be happy to send along for review and comment. Please feel free to contact me offline at bigron427-at-yahoo-dot-com. Looking forward to some great discussion! Ron Easley

Ron: Good info! That's pretty much the same timeline I've got. What I've been able to piece together is that there were two separate pallets, one for the 2 x GAR-1 / 2 x MB-1 loadout and one for the 6 x GAR-1 loadout. I also have no clue if the 6 Falcon pallet was ever operationally used or if they simply stored/junked it. I'd be interested in seeing whatever else you've come up with; the next major revision to my Falcon missile history will feature an added chapter on the MB-1, given that it was present on half of the Falcon-armed interceptors.
