Hi Sean,
Coming back around with some new information. A while back, I was talking with a gentleman named Bill Aull who worked on the the MG-13s on the F-101 pretty early on. By the time the F-101 was coming into service, Hughes had offered to sell the Air Force the 6 Falcon pallet but according to Bill, they decided not to purchase it. It makes pretty good sense when you think about it as it would not have offered the same operational effectiveness as a couple of Genies. One thing that I did not know is that capability for the GAR-1D was removed pretty early on as well, leaving the F-101 with just the IR-guided versions. Ping me offline if you are so inclined and I will see if I can locate that original message from Bill and forward it to you.
Cheers!
Ron

GAR-1D capability was removed? Any idea if this was before or after service entry? The info on the pallet is excellent. Do you still have my e-mail address? It'd be great to get ahold of anything new you've uncovered while I'm updating the Falcon history.

Hi Sean,
I still have it and will forward that message to you later tonight. My understanding is that the F-101B had GAR-1D capability for the first few years of service, beginning in 1958, but this was removed with an avionics upgrade in 1961. Bill's message has much more detail so I will dig that out and send it your way.

Just finished reading a history of the F-101 Voodoo and in there it says that the original designation of the F-101B model was F-109. It further says that this was the only aircraft assigned the F-109 designation. It says "contrary to published accounts the F-109 number was never assigned to the Ryan tail-sitter vertical take off aircraft". The F-109 concept was redesignated F-101B in August 1955. The F-109 designation was initially assigned to what was to become the McDonnell F-101B. After the "Voodoo" was redesignated F-101B, the USAF reassigned the F-109 designation to Bell Aircraft Corporation Model D-188A. The project, sponsored by both the USAF and US Navy, was a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) interceptor capable of speed in excess of Mach 2. Although the aircraft never got beyond the mock-up stage, it had some unusual design features such as eight J85 turbojet engines; a pair of engines was mounted on each wingtip in a rotating nacelle, the other four engines were mounted in the fuselage, two horizontal in the aft section and two vertically in the forward fuselage to provide downward thrust for hover and low speed flight. The wingtip nacelles were designed to rotate through a 100 degree arc; horizontal to 10 degrees past vertical, allowing the aircraft to fly a backwards hover.

German version of the F-109, the Dornier Do31E3. Notice the open flaps on the bottom and top of the wing tip engine pod housing the lift engines, also notice that the pods don't rotate.
