Just ribbin ya 'bout the Lady Bugs........................................... The "knots" on the red-white-striped ribbon (Army Good Conduct Medal) are similair but are an exception to the OLC rule. My Army GCM has 2 Bronze Knots..........The AFGM has 4 oak leaf clusters.......Was found not guilty in a courts martial for insubordination- maybe that is why it isn't a silver ol.........The Old Sarge.....The AF used the Army GC medal for a while..........

We live about twenty minutes from Randolph and are on-base fairly often for shopping and pills. While there we see probably every form of uniform the Air Force authorizes for wear. That included the PE shorts and shirt. Mostly there are BDUs of one type or another. There are also quite a few wearing some form of blues. It is, after all, the headquarters base. One thing I see that bothers me is the large number of members wearing BDUs off base. When I was in that was verboten. You could wear fatigues, no BDUs back then, while going to and from the base from home. You could be cited if you got caught wearing fatigues off base in a store, bar, etc. I'm sure some one has a good reason for allowing the wear of BDUs off base for most any reason. However, it seems to me it may be sending the wrong message. When people see military in Battle Dress Uniforms, they may get the idea that the combat ready zone is out there where they shop. I may be way off base to some of you, but I think it presents a much better picture to the community when they see our members in blues. I know some one has authorized this as I see colonels eating off base in BDUs. Maybe I'm way behind the thinking and need to see some good reasons for wearing BDUs off base. Maybe some of you that are on active duty can give more information about this. After all, I retired nearly thirty-seven years ago and things have changed. I couldn't agree more about the BDU wear off base Jim. The thing is, it is actually authorized to wear them for short convienience stops and eating at restaurants where civilians "wear comparable civilian attire." I'm not kidding! That's what it says!
My question is, what is comparable to BDUs?!
Times have changed and the kids these days absolutely hate wearing blues. I don't know why. Well, one reason off the top of my head is what our squadron commander told us the other day at commander's call. Something to the effect of, "I don't like wearing them either but the Chief of Staff told us we have to wear them."
Me, I actually like wearing them. I also think you are not in the minority I think most folks would rather see us wearing them then BDUs, flight suits or the new ABUs.

I was never a fan of the Blues myself, but then I feel dressed up when I tuck my shirt in...
I don't think that soldiers/airmen/sailors should be wearing any sort of the work uniform (aside from dress, or work dress) myself. I can understand for short stops at the store, but that's about it.
I will say this tho, they usually get a lot better treatment when they're in uniform, any uniform!

out of 25 yrs in the air force I bet I only wore a class A uniform maybe 50 to 75 times and hated every time I had to put one on. When I was stationed with the 603rd massq at Kadena I wore one when I got there Dec 1968 and when I left in Mar 1974 . All the rest of the time I was there I wore fatigues or civvies. Jay.

Whilst in the Randolph commissary to-day I had a short conversation with a bird colonel about the wearing of "work" uniforms when shopping, dining or other off-base activities. What caused me to ask the colonel was a conversation I had an hour earlier in COSTCO with a captain in a flight suit. The colonel said things have been loosened up quite a bit and felt it was overdone. He said BDU's could be worn, but not flight suits. So much for the captain being out of uniform. The colonel also told me that he thought the traditions and sense of who we are was much greater in my day. He feels that wearing blues when doing activities off-base makes us all look more professional. Will the current policies ever be changed. I didn't ask and the col. didn't volunteer an answer. Oh, Well!

I believe its a good thing showing the uniform off base. Any uniform. I think the public enjoys seeing the uniforms. I also believe it's a good recruiting tool also.
Speaking of recruiting. Last week while my wife visited a fabric store I wondered across the parking lot into the U.S. Air force Recruiter's office with my retired USAF hat on. He had some prospects in there and I asked if I could get back in. He replied, "I don't think so." And we all had a good laugh.
Anyway I told the kids about my retiring and getting over $2,000 a month in retirement check and the VA benifit check I get almost $1,500 a month. Added the good deals of commassary, base exchanges, space-a flights, and that my medical with tricare for my family is only $460 a year. That most civilians pay more than that a month for health care!
Recuiter told me to stop back in anytime. I gave him my name and number for future help.
You should stop in at your local recruiter's office when in the area. Never know when you might make a difference.
