Yes, a 456th FIS F-106 shot down the F-102 at Tyndall. The Dart pilot was on the range and questioned the target validity. The range controller confirmed that he had the correct target and to fire. The dart pilot questioned the controller again and was told to fire. He fired and fortunately the Dagger pilot was listening in and quickly realized what was happening and safely ejected. The dart pilot was cleared af any error and as I recall, the range controller was credited with the error. Both the Dart and Dagger pilots knew each other before the incident and have remained in contact to this day. I remember in 1966 there was a F-102 sillouette painted on the Six (458) and one very upset squadron officer ordered it removed post haste. That's my story and I'm stick'in to it! Pat

just saw your mess .i was at Tyndall then seems how i remember it being shot down and the story being the 106,the 102 a t33 and a drone were all up. the 106 released a missile thinking he had locked onto the drone but a second later realized it was a live a/c. then yelled into his Mic to warn the pilot he had a missile headed his way. now the story gets better, it was told that the T-Bird pilot was on the same freq as the 106 and thought it was coming at him. the 102 pilot was on another channel and never heard the call . well that was that. can't remember if the 02 pilot got out, i believe he did. the first stop the tbird pilot made when he got down was to change his underware. sounds far out but that was the story we got bill gehrmann

The deuce pilot was still at Tyndall in '92. He was still flying for those guys making drones out of the sixes. I heard him talking to one of our F15 pilots about the day he got shot down. He said everything was going along fine until he heard the radio chatter between the 6 driver and range officer. He said he quickly got "eyes on the 6" and determined that it was looking at him. He said he tried to turn away and get the __LL out of there and then he heard the six driver scream over the radio that the missile had locked up the wrong target. The duece driver said he didn't waste any time thinking about what the other guy meant, he said "I just grabbed the seat handles and pulled." He said that just after the opening shock of his chute he saw his recently vacated bird going down in a ball of fire.
