Try as I might, I can't find a word about Mantei anywhere except Lou Drendel's reference in "F-106 in Action".
Did anybody serve with him, or have any info about this man?

Thanks for the tip- that's quite a few potentials.
I'm sure you know- this is the Officer who started the Six-Shooter project for the Dart.
I wonder if there is any source to find retired USAF personnel? Can't be too many Manteis out there.......

Thank you, Gentlemen! I always thought that the Dart + Vulcan was a stroke of genius. As an engineer, it could not have been an easy task to squeeze an M61 inside the bay. It would be a crying shame if Major Mantei simply faded away in to Dart history without someone to collect information on the Six-Shooter Project...........

Dear Rattinox,
Colonel Mantei is my grandfather - he loves the Dart, and I'm sure he'd be happy to talk with you. Send me an email, and I'll gladly put you in touch with him. Thanks for your work to get him the recognition he deserves.

It is to the men who sacrifice without credit to whom all credit is due.

A very good read.
Nice to have the real story behind it, instead of all the hearsay we got. Thanks!
I was very impressed with the system they installed in the mockup.

I returned to the 475th Test Squadron from a tour in F-105s in 1969 and was assigned as the Projects Branch Chief. George Hennigan was the project officer “Six Shooter” at that time. My counterpart Chief of the Operations Branch was Frank Murray, back from a tour with the CIA flying A-12s. When George departed, John may have taken over for a short time.
The highlight and conclusion of the project was a mission to shoot down a Mace missile. We had about six photo chase to document the shoot down. The first was set up to do an in trail firing, and I forget who the pilot was but he flew the mission as briefed. When he got in range he started firing and although he hit it, nothing happened other than a few pieces flew off. He continued to fire and chased the Mace until it hit the water but never got it to blow up. The bosses said they wanted something a little more spectacular.
We did a little research on the Mace and found that the fuel tanks were heavily armored from the rear but the top had little or no armor. So the next mission was planned for the target to fly in a 45-degree bank which exposed the top of the tanks. I happened to pilot 785, the “Six Shooter” and we got all the photo chase in position and I started the firing run. I fired a short burst and the target exploded. I barely missed the debris. The movies thrilled the bosses all the way up to the Commander of ADC. He said it reminded him of shooting locomotives in Europe during WWII. Some said it was too short.

I'd like to add my :welcome to the forums Clancy! Exactly the kind of stories I love to read here!
I enjoyed the part about the WWII locomotives! It reminds me of a story told to me a long time ago about how Col Joe Rogers took out a few himself flying P-51s during the Korean War. Love the history!! (Love to see that film of the Six Shooter shootdowns too!!)
