when i was photographing the 318th fis, back in the '70's they were known as the "green dragons". they had the little green guy in a display case, on their tails and coffee cups. everywhere you look, a little green dragon. well. i was just reading the 1964 welcome guide for mcchord. they described the 318th as the "watusi" tribe.. is there anybody out there that can expand on the name??

the article in the '64 base guide did mention that fact. i'm wondering when the "green dragons" actually began... the back cover of the guide showing the 6 in the alert barn had the dragon in the tail starburst

The term "Green Dragon" keeps on singing, does it not? I transfer from the 318th aat McChord to the 601st TAc Control Wing at Sembach Air Base, West Germany. I took a hand full of "Green Dragon" stickers with me. After doing 2 years of jet engine work on the OV-10A Bronco I was awarded extra duty as the crewchief of acft#785. I put one of those stickers on each side of my aircraft and it was named the "Green dragon". I still had to supervise and assist on all the engine maintenance on all our squadrons aircraft and also do most of the crewchief duties of aircraft #785. Within four months my aircraft had a 98% takeoff reliblity rate which was the highest in the whole wing. One day my aircraft went in for corrosion control and wash. The NCOIC of corrosion control threw a fit when he saw the 4 inch "green dragon" stickers on each side of the aircraft under the front windshields. He made an issue of stickers stuck onto radar reflecting paint and I had to laugh as the antenas and anti-collision beacon lights were bigger and the were not painted. Nothing happened to me,,,,after all my aircraft had obtained a 98% take-off reliablity rate and was holding that spot for several months. Many pilots also request my aircraft when scheduled to fly. I had weekend duty once a month and sometimes took my aircraft to the trim pad and fine treaked the engines when we had no other work to do. Used it as a training aid. ;D Any way the corrosion control NCOIC stripped off my stickers so I then put a sticker on the front cover of my aircraft forms and wrote in green marker "The Green Dragon". My aircraft and I. The Green Dragon flew the skys of Europe for 2 years then I transfered back to McChord and was assigned to MAC.

you got me thinking.(which could be something) we ought to get the 318th part of this site straightened out. the dragons seems wrong. its the "green dragons" and the beginning says there were 70 a/c stationed at mcchord. i remember when the squadrons exec called. he wanted a shot of the "e" ramp cause all 17 birds were on the ground and in their parking spots to include 5 t-33's. as you can see in the photo i took from the top of the alert barn i think. ;D the last time i emailed mceep he was on vacation

mcgeep wishes he were on vacation, but rather is still TDY at Yokota AB Japan following what has turned into 3+ weeks of back to back TDY's at MCAS Iwakuni, Camp Fuji and CFA Yokosuka in Japan, Camps Bulter/Foster, Hansen, Courtney, Schwab, Gonsalves, Kinser, Lester, Buckner, Le Jima and MCAS Futenma in Okinawa and still serving. A total of 70 aircraft were assigned to the 318th with 7 losses. Of course not all 70 were assigned at the same time, but 70 F-106's did make the 318th ramp their home at one time or another. Here is a complete inventory of those 70 Sixes www.convairf-106deltadart.com/318thFISassignmentPage.html

by golly, you sure do get a lot of tdy. when i first read the 318th site it read like they're was 70 a/c assigned at one time. i just remember the ramp shot with the 17.and i can remember only 2 incidents with the "6". and i remember the t33 going straight in down in elma. may they rest in peace!
