Those of us "old timers" from the 5th at Minot should find a new book by Col. Jack Broughton interesting. The below link will take you to the article in yesterday's Minot Daily News about the book. It is only in hard binding at present and is $26.95. However Amazon has it listed for less than $18. Col. Broughton talks at some length about his time at Minot. Happy reading. ------------------------------ A fighter pilot’s life July 28, 2008 Many former members of the 5th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Minot Air Force Base say Col. Jack Broughton was a tough but fair commander. Full Story Amazon.com Link

I was In Thailand in 72 for the Christmas party, stayed until the end in Aug 73, USAF gave me the Freedom Bird for my Bday to get home on 15 Aug.
Will read the book and let you know.
First in and Last out it takes guts and a bottle of JD to play chicken with a SA-2 YGBSM

Guys, I just finished reading "Rupert Red Two" and have to say it's one of the best books written by a pilot of that era I have ever read. The parts about his time at Minot with the 5th are just a part of his story in the USAF but very exciting and well told. If you get the opportunity you really should read this book. His description of how he demonstrated the poorly designed ejection seat is quite convincing.
The only part of the book I disliked are the last few pages where he described his work following his retirement. It's quite short and seemed to me as being quickly written as an afterthought. Other than that, like I said, it's a very good book

I had the pleasure to be serving in the 355TFW, Takhli Thailand, while Col. Jack Broughton was the Vice Wing Commander.
When Majors Tolman and Ferguson returned from the mission, where they had fired their guns on the AAA site in Hanoi, the gun doors were missing from both aircraft. We don't know if they ever did shoot up the Soviet Ship but that was the story that was going around at the time and it sure did sound good and everyone was hoping that it was true.
I remember the night the T-39 came to Takhli and took Col. Broughton and the two pilots away for their court-martial.
The big sticks in Washington sure tied the hands of our pilots. It was a real shame!!!
