From Jeff's avatar...
"You know your landing gear is up if it takes full power to taxi to your parking spot"
I was thinking about that today. We had our new squadron photo taken today and just like all week the wind has been howling!! Normally when we taxi in after a mission the FE (me) brings all the engines down to what we call "low-speed ground idle". The APU is on by then providing electrical power. Anyway, I was out there talking to one of our pilots and he told me night before last they had to bring all four engines up to "normal power" just to fight the wind and taxi in!! I've never had to do that but I can see it happening!
So, although they weren't at "full power" it did take a little extra help to get taxi'd in to parking!

I landed a Citabria in a strong crosswind 'way back in the 70s and it blew me off the runway. Fortunately I didn't hit anything. I could not taxi that airplane back to the ramp, the wind was blowing so hard. I got out and had to push it backwards by the tail back to the ramp. What a learning experience that was for me!!

I'm not a pilot nor was I ever an aircrew member but I was TDY to Zaragoza AB, Spain several times with the 81OMS at RAF Woodbridge with our F-4's. It seems they have some regularly high winds, being situated between two mountain ranges. We always traveled on a C-130 and one time getting ready to go back to England, the plane was rocking very noticeably. When we started taking off, it seemed like we rolled a couple hundred feet and were airborne. Of course I have no way of knowing how long the take-off roll was but it was not nearly as long as usual. Someone said all they did was release the brakes and the wind did all the rest. That was probably the windiest flightline I ever worked on. And that includes Minot.

Ever takeoff or landed at Lages? That a trip with the wind tunnel effect.

Lugnuts55, I've been TDY to Zaragoza AB, Spain also. We had Ov-10A Broncos and we had to tie them down or they would blow away. :
