I was in Tucson, AZ from 1974-75 looking at UofA campus, then attended there from 1977-80........There were a pair of "Sixes" that flew regularly from DMAFB......I was told it was the Base Commander, they flew every Thursday morning and their approach profile brought them right over the campus.......it was so much fun to watch I purposely skipped class to be entertained.........Who was this unit? and could anyone shed some light on their history...........Thanks

If my memory serves me right, during those years the 5th had an alert detachment at DM. It was more than likely the Det commander getting his flying hours. When I was at Kinglsey Field Det 1 from McCord, we always had the Tuesday morning no notice scramble where the Det commander flew his training missions.

I wondered about that because they broke all hell loose, they did high speed passes and all sorts of cool things.......Then some guy had to argue with me saying they were B-58's.......and well he wouldn't accept the fact the Air Force retired the Hustler in 1969

5th Det 1 was at DM. My ex was a crew chief with them down there.

Then this was part of ADC I would assume correct??
Sure miss seeing these interceptors fly, they had a sound like no other
