Okay, old brain cells here having an issue. On a Loring AFB Yahoo Group I read a post and it kinda jogged a few memories. groups.yahoo.com/group/Loring_AFB/message/11945The posts were talking about the 27th checkerboard tail art and such. One member mentions a "Top Hat" in the art. I don't recall seeing that in thespan I was at the 27th. But... somewhere banging around in this old head the term "Top Hat" is familiar. I want to say I think it was reference to when the SIXES flew the USN at Miramar in excercises (TOP Gun?), but I am not sure. Help out guys, refresh me please. From Loring Yahoo Forum: Daryle, I have a photo of a SIX taken in the early sixties. The 27th insignia shows the band of yellow and black checker board across the tail and a triangle with a star in each corner. Inside the triangle is a rectangular picture of a bird in flight ( wings spread ) in front of what looks like a top hat. This is def. NOT the round falcon patch with the red outer circle. This could be an earlier design. Something to think about, Jim 61-64 AJ

The insignia you reference may be the one from the present day 27th Ftr Sqdn....The original took six hand cut stencils to accomplish....Or it could have been tagged by another sqdn when on their base.........The version with the falcon was approved in 1927 when it was the 27th Pursuit Sqdn.......The Old Sarge
