This topic has to raise a few memory cells. You know the surprise in the middle of the night as the First Shirt and OD did a snap room check. I only went through a few and luckily got by without a scrape. Loring was really the only place I had to deal with the random checks. Usually it meant quickly grabbing the frozen six pack off the outside windo ledge and stashing it As best I could. However I had one real scare.
In 1971 I was finally a Buck Sgt and got my own dorm room. The SSgt that previously had it had married and moved out a week earlier. ONe cold THursday night we got nailed with a Shake Down at 1 AM. Unfortunately for me I had dumbly brought a local Caribou girl to the barrack for some private time. We were in a very personal nature as I heard the Shirt holler announcing the inspection. Yeah, major panic set in. I knew there was no way to get her out of the room.
Quickly I dressed in an old pair of jeans and grabbed the girl. I locked her in the lone locker at the corner of the room and prayed. The SSgt that moved out had just cleared that locker earlier that day and gave me his lock. Twenty minutes passed as I stood waiting door now open. The Shirt and company came inn and nosed around checking drawers and open lockers. He looked at the locked one and said "Open it". I explained SSgt XXXX had left and would be back later for his remaining stuff secured there.
The Shirt looked at me and smiled wryly, I think he knew damned well what was up. He told me to be sure to get his crap out ASAP as it was my room now and not his. They putzed around and left. I was about ready to wet myself by now. Thank heaven the girl stayed quiet. Then I noticed the bra half under my bed and about crapped. I let her out of the locker a bit later and needless to say the mood was gone.
At 4 AM I snuck her out wearing a pair of my fatigues and took her home. Needless to say I never tried that again, it was safer to get a room off base or stay at her place. I still want to believe I pulled the stunt off, but kind of feel the SHirt knew damned well what was up. OH, They did bust me for the beer though. It was Naraganset, so no loss.

AJ--we never had any shakedowns at Duluth. I only lived in the barracks ( , dorm) there for six months before I got married and moved downtown. I bet they get a lot of shakedown inspections there now--the place has been turned into a federal prison. I never lived in the barracks ( , dorm) at Minot, so can't say what happened there, but it was a SAC base, so nothing would surprise me. TF

This happened a Grand Forks with the 460th.
MSgt George Howery was called to assist in the inspection. The Dorm Rat had some live .22 shells in an ashtray. George saw them and said "You don't want these, do you?". The Airman said "No" so George put them is his pocket and let it go. There was no gun in the room.
Say what you want about George, but with his faults, he was still a decent guy. Black Bart

During my Army days I used to conduct the no-notice inspections when I was the Drug and Alcohol monitor. Of course the First Sergeant was there but I planned and really did them. I would usually (intentionally) take CQ duty the night before so I would be there and one night I was getting my stuff together for the obligatory piss tests that would accompany the inspections. My "runner", a PFC asked what I was doing although he figured it pretty quickly and became very nervous! I asked him what was going on and he started to tell me he did some marijuana the week before while on leave! I quickly read him his rights and he made a written statement!
Well, the inspection didn't turn up anything and when we got the piss test results everyone, including my nervous runner, passed! The Commander decided to do extra "ramdom" tests on the kid and he did eventually get popped, and got discharged for it, but somehow got lucky on that test.

No shakedown in the barracks that I remember, but we had random tests every other week during the golden flow years... ;D
