We all had a favorite place to blow off steam, drink brews and off course check out the lacal female populace. Share yours. Might just stir up a few memories for all of us. Maybe an unsettled bar brawl too. Hehehe.
Loring - We had the Rendevous and Crossroads close to the base, but I preferred the upstate parts via the Strawberry shortcut (that stir any memory cells?) to Madawaska. There I hung out at Canaans (Casino) and ate at the Royal. The Royal owners had a really cute daughter Judy in the early 70's. For a good half drunk break the Burgers across from Canaans (Eddie's?) were fantastic. The guy served the greasiest most delicious burgers of all. I spend many a night at the Midtown Motel.
Griffiss (actually my home town) - Of course The Rusty Nail on West Dominic stands out. I had to say that as I bartended there in 72-73. Peanut shells all over the floor always. Wednesdays and Sundays we had Al Palluso playing solo. He did fantastic Neil Diamond. After partying Mothers was fantastic with all night steak, eggs, homefries and greens.
Other places in the Rome area were The Plaza (great Italian), Benvans (Also great place. Dated the bartender that lived over the place Patty for six months). Closer to my house on Lake Delta was the Snubbing Post. Lou Hollenbeck, the owner, had his hands full with us FIS guys. I can't forget Coalyard Charlies and The Rathskeller.
I never really dabbled on the on base clubs. At my age then it was to LIFER to us young guys. Going to the Legion in Rome with my Dad was enough for me. There were a few other places in both places, but for the life of me I cannot recall them now. Oh I can't leave out DanDee Donuts on the boulevard in Rome. Sobered up there many a times.

Oh, the old Griff Spent almost 4 years there in the 416th Bomb Wing (SAC) until I took a BOP to McChord AFB, WA. The 318th FIS at McChord was a good assignment. I don't think there was a bad FIS assignment anywhere. The Rusty Nail, believed I spent a few evenings in there. I wasn't much of a drinker and newly married so I didn't get out much. Most of my off duty time (weekends & holidays) I went to NE Pennsylvania to our family farm. Hunting, fishing, canoing on the Delaware River, and of course I did farm chores like milk cows, put in hay, and shoveled lots of cow $hit. Like was good.
