In 1976 prior to the opening of the Air and Space Museum myself and a photographer, Sgt Bill Thomspon got the chance to do a preopening visit to the displays and building. I got gotten permission to visit and do an article for the Military Press and the Smithsonian on the new digs. Talk about being in awe. General Collins (yep Apollo 11 commander) was the new curator and gave us the tour. We shot a ton of images that day over four hours. Too bad though, out of all the images I only got to keep one. The rest were used by the museum and military media services for promotions. The one below is that image I got. Bill took this of me pretending to climb into the Spirit of St. Louis painted on the wall of the underground garage. Too bad they had to close the garage to visitors. The entire wall space down there had fantastic art renderings of famous aircraft all over. AJ

That is incredibly cool!! If it had been in color it would have never worked. Better than any 'Leaning Tower' shot or any of those other goofy illusion shots I have ever seen! I also was thinking of the just the "look" of you and the '70's USAF uniform. Now granted, the uniform (sans jacket) hasn't changed much since then but the people's hair, the way they wore the uniform and the way they presented themselves has. I recall when I was in CAP in the 70's before I joined the Service, my buddies and I were able to tell what service someone was in just by their haircut! It probably sounds silly but we were accurate more often then not. (e.g. "That guy is in the Navy!" Or, "That guy is an Army grunt for sure!" And most common since I lived in Moses Lake, WA and we had Fairchild to the east and McChord to the west was, "Look at that guy. He's Air Force for sure! Wonder if he works on Sixes?!") We really did that! Of course, look at me now that I'm in the USAF myself!! (Me in my KC-135 crew chief days flying notheast of Hawaii while we were dumping fuel in March, 2006.) Mark

It's funny the things our friends will do for us. BTW, is there a sound track to go along with the photo?
