Mark. The official speed mark for single engine fighter was, and still is Major Rodgers flight. A comment by a fighter pilot is to be taken with a grain of salt. He may have driven a Six to a cockpit instrument speed higher than Rodgers, but that's not how official speed records are made. An air speed record is the highest airspeed attained by an aircraft of a particular class. The rules for all official aviation records are defined by Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), which also ratifies any claims. On December 15, 1959 Major Joe Rogers of the United States Air Force Flight Test Center flew F-106A Serial Number 56-0467 on a straight line eleven mile (18 km) course at an altitude of 40,00 feet (12192m) to a measured world absolute speed record of 1,525.95 mph (2455.77km/h) Mach 2.39, surpassing the previous record of 1,484.3mph (2388.95km/h) set on October 7, 1959 in a Mikoyan Ye-6/3, a.k.a. Ye-66 (Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21F-13 with different engine) flown by Colonel Georgi Mosolov of the USSR by 34.63 mph (55.73 km/h). f-106deltadart.com/speedrecord.htmSome of us early six ground crews knew that 56-0459 was scheduled for the run. It had been specially prepared for speed run with "Higher Performnce tuned engine", all openings on aircraft were covered and waxed etc. But it had suffered an engine issue and handling problems prior to scheduled run. So 56-0467 was pulled from flight line, engine fuel limiters open fully so pilot controlled engine and off it went to history. I had several pilots at Tyndall that said they could easily break Rodgers record by doing same fuel limiter valve increase and using a B Model as it had a much better Aero package due to second seat and better "Coke bottle" design. They said it was apparent when doing FCF on A versus B Model as B model would get to speed and higher speed in normal trim settings. Lorin

I've also been told that the F-16 is faster, by more than one person. All I do is ask them which one is in the record books and leave it at that.

Hey Mark. I just ran a 10 sec quarter mile in my 1992 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe. Don't believe it? Doesn't matter I said it so it must be correct...lol I even said it on Facebook so do a search and it will show you my post. So it is multiple sources. I used to tend bar at both McGuire NCO Club and Tyndall NCO and O Club. After a few drinks every thing becomes "Son, it's faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money." Pilots, manly FIGHTER Pilots tell stories that would make anyone disbelieve them. I was goof friends with a C-130 pilot who actually won a medal for saving a C-130 by landing with a single engine. But he had already dropped cargo and was low on fuel. One night he was trying to effluence some bar ladies and changed his story to he took off from grass strip in Viet Nam with just a single engine. No not a fighter but C-130A. Did I challenge him...Nope his story. Want to know the most dangerous thing on base? Old Fighter Pilots telling about their Air To Air victory. Both hands spinning and moving almost Mach 1 while he describes every turn he made and every round/missile he shot. Moral of story is don't believe anything you see or hear and only half of what you see. Who flew an F-106 to World Speed Record? Not what some article says, but what is recorded by FAI. Lorin

There ya go Lorin. I deleted my posts.
Sorry it got you stirred up. You win. Everything fighter pilots say is pure, Officer's Club BS.
I really don't think I deserve to me made a fool of, however. I hope I don't do that to any of you.

Mark, I am not upset with you over anything. I was simply showing that the rumor that this other guy was fastest, first wasn't factual. A formal attempt at a speed record is not political although results may be used as propaganda. Once the SR-71 set the record very few attempts have even be attempted. One thing that I remember back in the day, was claims about performance limits. The Aircraft manufacturer always wanted to be best at everything. The Official US performance releases were always low compared to actual performance. I remember back at McGuire in about 1965 we started getting B-52's coming down from Canada on east coast. They always had a head start and our Six's would get told by B-52 that they had killed us. Well during one exercise we had 2 Sixes launch before being scrambled by exercise leaders. As B-52 came down over New York one of Six pilots called out B-52 as dead. B-52 challenged call and said we don't even have you on radar. Six replied don't look down for us we are 5,000 above you. And they were. At the time I believe most sources showed ceiling of 50,000 feet. But I have debriefed many six crews who were cruising at 50,000 and popping up to 60,000 easily. As the old sarge would have said, if I was upset with you, you would know it before anyone else. RIP old friend. Lorin

No upset, no bad feelings. You didn't need to delete your post, and don't ever worry about upsetting someone. I don't think you've posted anything that would upset any of us anytime I've been here.
