Hey fellow Sixers, can anyone out there tell me if the gun program ever became standard equipment out in the FIS's?? I worked on the testing of the system at Tyndall while in Weapons Release/Gun Shop but I transfered out without ever knowing the final results.

Merl, the SnapShoot gunsight (new face assembly for the radar scope) was installed at the 48th in Feb, 80. As the displays were installed, the computer programs were updated. The "B" model and 57 models were not updated. Rumor was that each unit had 6 gun pods. I can not confirm this. Pods were loaded, boresighted and test fired, but I don't have a clue how you test fire a mounted gun on the ground. The nose gear could be manually retracted if you had a nose jack, but the jack is still in the way. ?? Pilots shot at tow targets that had the capability of recording how close near misses were. Since I retired in June, 80 all I know is that at the 48th, if they had 6, all were not up at one time. Don't even know if 2 were up continuously. Now the NJ ANG ran a couple continuously. As Reg Six outfit stood down, did the guns transfer to the ANG? I don't know, but from the time the birds came back from IRAN with the split bay doors and bubble canopy, the pilot made reference that we had the guns in crates with "Do Not Open Till 1986" on them. I can only guess that the holdup was the SnapShoot GunSight. Jack
