Mark, Back when I worked for a living I spent over a year in charge of the F100 and F110 jet engines tech data at the Jet Engine Program Office at WPAFB. The USAF actually used two companies to build engines for F-16. Pratt & Whitney along with GE. The TF30 powered the F-111 A and E aircraft. Since the Navy tested their version of the F-111 prior to selecting the F-14 it also used the TF30. The F-14 was Navy jet, but was used at Red Flag when at Nellis AFB. It needed the extra power of the F-110 in place of the TF30 originally used. With the original TF30 it was out gunned by most USAF front line fighters...ie F-15 and F-16. So when the USAF looked at F-14 it was with older TF30 engine. Had they evaluated the USAF modified versions they might have selected it.
