First time NASA Flew all three of the remaining WC-57 from Houston. I remember the ADC Version of these used as targets during ADC Exercises. My uncle, Major Homer Bay flew these out of Dyess AFB TX These ADC birds would act as enemy incoming over Northern tier a lot. All fighter bases could intercept them if they got early scramble. Lorin

We had a SAC detachment next to 539 FIS Squadron at McGuire AFB back in early 1960's. They were there when I got there in 1964. I remember talking to crews from these and would see one take off when I got to work and wouldn't get back until next shift almost over. They flew 10-12 hour missions. Lorin

Lorin The 4713th Radar Eval. Squadron at Griffiss had two of them.... Also Rome Research and Development had 2 of them....... Yokota AB had two and two WB-57 which I believe were not made by Martin

After posting this I started thinking of my uncle Homer who flew these for a few years as ADC "enemy forces" I remember visiting him back in 60'swhen he was at Tyndall for fighter school and I was TDY from 539th. We flew some hot missions and got a couple drones. But he once told me that the B-57 fleet was most dangerous plane we owned. If you remember seeing them on flight line. they had a nose down attitude and could not engage barrio. The nose was so low, when it went over cable it would hit bottom of plane and "relock" instead of raising and collecting the main gear, thus slowing them down.
Back about 1968 I was looking through old ADC Interceptor mag and saw the "We point with Pride" article. It was about my uncle Homer. He took a F-101 from 555FIS on a FCF. He got a Center Line Fuel Tank unsafe light and was unable to use or dump fuel from it. He contacted Sq Ops and they had no history of landing one with Unsafe and Full Center line tank. So after consulting with McDonnell Aircraft they said it was very likely that it would separate on landing and burst into flames. So ops told my uncle to land as if you have eggs on wheels. He flew around trying to get G-forces to make tank break away as the Jettison feature was also not working. He landed it as smoothly as he could and coasted to a stop and pulled off active runway. He then exited aircraft, along with RSO. Maintenance came out and put supports under tank and defueled it. As they were taking fuel nozzle out of tank it "jettisoned" itself onto runway, but didn't catch fire or hit anyone. So Homer later said his fifth of Crown Royal that night helped his nerves recover. lol
Gas was down to $1.89 yesterday near Cincinnati.
I took wife down to Jungle Jim's, an international grocery store. We got some German, English and Thai foods.

Gene, I worked on the B57B for three years in the 8th bomb sqdn Johnson air base Japan.I beg to differ with your uncle about being unsafe , its is the only modren air craft that landed with the gear up and took off with gear up again (3rd bomb wing commander was the pilot) the only damage to the air craft was the bomb door it was torn to sh*t. the sheet metal shop repaired the minor skid marks and the bomb door replaced flew again in a few day`s later. That's the truth and nothing but the truth so help me
Jay.

Mine works, but so does yours's. Long time coming, but needed. The B-1 and B-2 will be gone, but the B21 will join B-52 as our front line bombers. They didn't build enough B2's. The B-1 was a old design cancelled by Carter and brought back to life by Regan, but it was outdated by then.

This was on my news feed today and I was able to find this new article on the source URL.
