Anyone know what the weight of an A-model bubble canopy with glass? My canopy actuator failed again (59-0086). I will take it out next week and attempt repairs; but just in case its' not repairable, I will replace it with a linear actuator. I just don't know what weight class actuator to get.

Hey, Welcome back!!!!!!!!! Believe you are looking at around 125 lbs.......... Exact weight, unknown to me. Don't believe the weight was listed in the -5 weight and balance handbook, as the a/c wasn't considered flyable without it......

Thanks Jim. The shuttle inside the canopy actuator disengaged because it overran the cheesy limit switch. I need to pull the actuator out and reset the shuttle. It's a real rube goldberg mechanism. I will have to calculate how much force is needed because the actuator lifts close the fulcrum. I am estimating I may need 500 lbs of lifting force. This is my girl telling me that I have been playing with the F-8 crusader and she misses the attention.

Since 590086 will doing extra duty as one of our few "climb aboard" aircraft, I decided to replace the actuator with a contemporary unit. I found this one on Amazon; 12v,11 13/16 stroke, 450lb lift ability. I have been fixing the original about every year and a half. Time for it to retire. I'll post some updates.

Shadowgunner, Good idea on the new actuator.
Did you get the PM I sent regarding missile bay doors?
Thanks, Pat P.

Pat; Yes I got your email. I'll recheck with Ralph when I get this canopy project completed. I got the actuator installed, needs some additional bits & bobs for permanence but it is workable. I did 30s clip of it working. The new actuator takes 60s for full transit, so I didn't get the complete travel. here's the clip on my youtube channel: New linear actuator for canopy
