All F106 Troops; Here's some info on a couple books written by Ray Janes. Thanks Ray! PS: We are getting closer to getting a collection of hundreds of photos from our 2015 Colorado Springs Reunion. It will be on a flash stick at a very reasonable price. Stay tuned! Bobski
From: janesx2@verizon.net To: Bobski9933@aol.com Sent: 12/7/2015 11:28:49 A.M. Eastern Standard Time Subj: book Bob, I’ve been working with Doug on his book and he got interested in mine. I never mentioned it because I really didn’t think many people in the F-106 group would be interested but I’m about to close it down and if anybody is I am about to place my last order.
I came to write it this way. I served over 3 years in Alaska in the 317th FIS flying the F-102 which was commanded by Joe Rogers. It was a unique squadron and he wanted a book written about what it was like in the 317th. He tapped a guy to write it and he was working on it and did a lot of the work but his wife got cancer and he had to give it up to care for her. I had written a genealogy and a memoir and had minored in Journalism in college and taught it for about 11 years in my second career so I volunteered to finish it. I called it Cold Warriors. The guys really liked it and I got a message from a buddy who reread it before our next and probably last reunion next year. He said he got tears in his eyes because it brought back so many memories.
I took a copy to a 94th FIS flying the F-106 at Selfridge reunion and they asked me to write one for them. So I did. It covers the entire history from WW I to when the unit was redesignated and the 94th was changed to an F-4 unit and is now at Langley flying the F-22. I called it SPADS and Sixes because we restored a SPAD that is now in the AF Museum and flew it to honor Eddie Rickenbacker who attended the 50th anniversary of the SQ and the Wing while I was there.
I later wrote an expanded Version of my Vietnam Diary at the request of the Vietnam Archives at Texas Tech University. Any way if any body in the unit wants any of these I’ll be happy to order whatever is necessary. The three books are $25 each plus shipping. Ray Janes janesx2@verizon.net

Finally got to meet Ray Janes today! Ray, my buddy Tom Dawson, and I met for lunch at Denny's in Lewisville, TX. Ray brought a copy of his book Spads And Sixes and Tom bought it. Ray told us a bunch of stories about his time in the USAF, as a school teacher in Ft. Worth and as a member and volunteer at the Cavanaugh Air Museum. www.cavflight.org/
www.facebook.com/CavanaughFlightMuseum
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavanaugh_Flight_Museum
Tom has been to Cavanaugh many times and Ray is going too take him over to meet everyone and see if he would like to become a volunteer. They reward their volunteers with free flights in the museum's aircraft. Cavanaugh has a number of frequently flown aircraft which helps fund the museum and future growth.
Ray has flown many USAF aircraft and served in several F-106 squadrons working with guys like Bruce Gordon, Joe "Speed Record" Rogers, and with John C. Marcotte when they first used laser guided bombs in the Vietnam war. He also flew OV-10 Broncos in Vietnam.
It was a great day and when we meet again I'm going to buy one of Ray's few remaining books from his final print run. Pat P.

My USAF buddy Tom Dawson and I met Ray Janes for lunch again yesterday. Tom had bought an autographed copy of his book Spads and Sixes last time we met and I got one this time. Can't wait to read it after Tom said it was outstanding. We also ordered two of his other books, Cold Warriors and his Vietnam Diary. Ray told us stories from all three books.
Here are 3 USAF vets, hard of hearing, trying to discuss history in a Denny's full of lunch crowd. We'll have to find a quieter restaurant next time.
After lunch, Ray and Tom went to Cavanaugh Air Museum to meet the folks there. I had a bunch of errands to run.
I had preordered from Amazon, a copy of Doug Barbier's new book World's Fastest Single-Engine Jet Aircraft: Convair's F-106 Delta Dart Interceptor. It arrives today and I saved $17.12 by preordering last year. final cost was $27.83.

Here's Ray delivering the book to me:

Like I said earlier, his name is Ray Janes. It's on the file name when you click his picture.
Ray is a 22 year USAF pilot and wrote the book he is holding. He has flown may types of aircraft and earned the Bronze Star with a V in Vietnam. Spent years flying F-102 and F-106 and last 4 years worked in the Pentagon
