There was a F-102 ANG wing at Ellington AFB, TX (Located next to the Johnson Space Center southeast of Houston). Famous for one of it's pilots - see below. Copied from a Blog site 4freedoms.org/ : The 147th earned its first Air Force Outstanding Unit Award in 1966 when it was proclaimed, "The most combat ready of all Air Guard units." From 1968 through 1970, pilots from the 147th participated in "Palace Alert" and served in Southeast Asia during the height of the Vietnam War. Pat Perry December 1969 to June 27, 1970: Bush trains full-time to be an F-102 pilot at Ellington Air Force Base. Conclusion: Bush ENTERED the service out of college in 1968. It takes two years to become a jet pilot. His unit was back from Viet Nam when he was finally trained. Luck of the draw? Nothing more

Texas ADC Base: Webb AFB at Big Springs TX was the home of the 331st FIS from 1956 thru 1967. I think the unit had F-104 and later F-102 aircraft.

Webb AFB in Big Spring, Texas had the 331st FIS. They started with F-86's, then went to F-102's in about 1960, then to F-104's in about 1963. I was with the 331st as a radar technician from 1960-1963 on the F-102A. We took part in the 1961 William Tell Meet using the F-102A. During the Cuban Crisis in 1962 we were sent to Homestead AFB. For our part in that we were awarded the Air Force Outstanding Unit medal.

I was also at Webb AFB from 1962 until 1965. We had F-102's until late 1963 when we went to F-104's. Besides William Tell we took part in the 'Sooner Boomer' program over Oklahoma City. That was to check the feasibility of super sonic aircraft flying over large cities.
