Pretty cool story. Relatively recent as well for those that thought morse code was just something old amateur radio operators messed around with. (Some countries still require you learn it to get your license. Canada is the closest one to us that does, and they require only 5 words per minute. Seems awfully slow as I am learning at 20 wpm!)

I can't quite copy all of this yet, but am getting there!

Is that sending or receiving? ?? Will they let you use a bug for testing? ?? I'm learning to copy at 20 wpm, and feel okay sending at 17, though I am not even close to having a real, on-air QSO quite yet!
The goal in this class is to get us a good grasp of all the letters/numbers/characters so we can understand them. It's not quite that regimented as far as the class goes. Strictly volunteer, and as far as testing it is really up to our instructor. If he feels we got it, we got it! Most of the work is self-study anyway, and during our online sessions he reviews with us, sends us a few words from the homework we had, then asks us to send him some stuff. I'm using a Vibroplex Vibrokeyer, which is sort of an electrical "bug", which is great. (The original bug -- which they still make -- is strictly mechanical.) Another guy uses the same, and the other two use iambics. My practice partner has a cheap, practice oscillator with a straight key, but by the end of the week should have her iambic set up.
This is the keyer I am using.
And this is my straight key, but I haven't used it much.
--... ...--, -.- ..... ... .--. .--.
