That's right. UNDER the arresting cable! Tobin Fuller posted these pics of 57-0234 over on the Facebook page. Here's what he wrote... "This aircraft, while aborting a takeoff, had the nose gear collapse. It ran into the end-of-runway cable which then slid over the nose and ending up embedded in the vertical fin."
Amazing. I asked him, and he guessed this was around 1980-1981. You can see it was before the ADTAC insignia was added to the nose. Notice how it took off some of the spine, and part of the cable is lying on the floor of the hangar next to the chunk taken off the spine. The pilot must have aborted the takeoff very close to, or after refusal speed, then slammed on the brakes in order to collapse the nose gear, and keep it on the runway. Wow. Edit: Update - Tobin posted this earlier today (3/28): "Mark, I noticed the name Kinsey in the link above. My memory is a little fuzzy, but I now I am remembering. We were in the 318th together. I think I got these photo's from him which means the accident year would have been 1982. I had just left the 318th that January. So if that's the case credit Bill Kinsey for the photographs."
The link he refers to is this photo of 57-0234. Notice the discoloration on the spine. Possible post-repair? www.f-106deltadart.com/photo_gallery/index.php/318th-FIS/kinsey-wt92-14

I guess that's why they front windscreen had the metal center line. To keep emergency cable out of pilots face. I was stationed at McChord in 62AMS when this occurred. I don't remember reading anything about it or hearing about it. 318th must have kept it quite.

Wow! With the front gear folded and the cable running up the backbone the pressure was greatest after the inflight refueling door and it cut through the first backbone panel and ripped her through the vertical stab. Thank the Lord the pilot made it through that!
Great reporting Mark!

Update from Steve Hann on Facebook about when this happened. It was in 1982, and he was involved in the repairs getting her ready for WT82, "...by the skin of our teeth." All pics are added to the 318th FIS gallery, and here is the first photo, and text I wrote. f-106deltadart.com/photo_gallery/index.php/318th-FIS/57-0234-1Mark O
