I find it interesting how many cargo aircraft are of similar design.
The Airbus 400M, certainly does look like a C-17, with 8-bladed turbo engines.
Take a look at this article from Wikipedia, on the YC-125, and you see where the basic design may have begun.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_YC-125_Raider
This site has the schematic of the design.
www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/c-125-schem.htm
Jack Northrop built a small number of these birds, which never made it to regular service, but I worked on at Sheperd in tech school.
If you then look at the C-123, on to the C-130, then the C-133, C-141, the C-5, C-7 and C-17, you see the same basic design, just modernized and made larger.
I guess Northrop found an enduring design.
There are a number of other planes, built by Russia, Italy and other places, using the same basic design, and very successfully.
There are still some 123s being flown, as well as lots of 130s.
