I started a discussion on the Facebook F-106 group, about this object ( the round bump within the circular plate with six screws) on the spine of my plane 590086. I is apparently a Microwave Landing System (MLS) antenna. It is possible that this aircraft, formerly a systems test bird, may have been a testbed for MLS at some point. Anyone have further insight on the project or tests? Attachments:

Obviously, I never worked ILS on the Six, but I have reliable sources that tell me that MLS is in use by the military. That being said, I'd say the odds are pretty good.
I can try and find out more about it if you'd like, but my sources are currently taking leave at the moment.

You might just go over to East Alton and ask the folks who installed that item if it was used in conjunction with the Remote Control of the aircraft when it was in the drone program! I would think it was installed during that life in the program. We never had that as a useable ILS antena. The airframe would shadow the ILS signals and I do not see it ever working properly. Now as for a satellite control receiver - that would be possible! MArv

I agree with Marv, the ILS system has two components, Localizer and Glidepath. The fuselage would have blocked ILS system with this location. Our ILS antenna(s) was under radome and on same bulkhead as our RADAR antenna. We had upper and lower UHF antenna so we could maintain communications while flying in any position. Lorin

As it turns out, my plane has an additional MLS on the underside. Just noticed this the other day. I wonder if that changes anything? Jim M Attachment Deleted
