Wow, great story forwarded from Roger Gomas. Thanks Roger! Bobski Be sure to see the video of the terrain surrounding the airport in the last 60 sec of the movie.. Cortez a/p: 5900 feet elev, 7200 feet long , 100 feet wide. This is aviation history that few know about. Especially the end if you have never landed in Cortez. Mostly in English but read the English sub-titles when present. www.hmhfp.info/SG_09E.htmlPat P.

Thanks Roger, Bobski & Pat P. for posting this.
My wife and I were on a road trip through Southern Utah and Northern Arizona to visit the Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks. Then while we were at Canyon de Chelly I happened to catch up on my email and check up on this site, I caught this post, and as we were going to be in Cortez on our way to the Hovenweep N.P. and as I had lived in Colorado off and on for over thirty years and this was a piece of history that I had never heard about, I had to stop at the airport and check it out. In the small terminal (there was no one there at 9 am but a sleeping cat) they have a very nice commemorative display of Gen. Hua and the "Miracle at Cortez". Thanks again for adding an interesting piece of history to our trip.
