I was visiting with my Pastor today after the Church's Pot luck lunch. We are both veterans and I found him in the kitchen doing dishes. I asked him, "Reminds you of KP (Kitchen Police) back in the military?" We all got a laugh out of it. He then asked me, "Do you know what the term WHOLE NINE YARDS means?" I answered. I don't, but heard it before." He told me he heard it explained on the history channel and told me about it. If you know what it is then please just Please respond "Yes" and lets see how many know it. Older veterans should get it. No cheating with Google. LOL Will try and post its meaning in a day or two.

I was told that The Whole Nine Yards came from WW2. The B-17 Bomber carried 50 Cal. machine guns and when they returned from a mission the Crew Chief would ask the gunner how much Ammo he had used. If he had shot all Ammo out of his gun he would reply the The Whole Nine Yards ! He was issued nine yards of 50 Cal. ammo. A dosent at the AMC Museum at Dover AFB told this to me many years ago. He was a B-17 Vet. and was shot down in Germany.

the ammo belts used in fighters and bombers starting in WWII were 27 ft long which is 9 yards. That's were the saying comes from.

The Cat is out of the Bag was explained to me by a neighbor in England. He had spent time in the Royal Navy. The cat of nine tails whip was kept in a bag on Captains Deck. It was used as punishment on board.
How about we are "Back to Square One", another British phrase from back in early radio days.

Think it came from a kid's game.
In electronics, it could have something to do with the square syne wave put out by some of the older meters?

Soccer, or football as it is known in England, has been around longer than TV. So when a radio announcer would call the game on live radio the field was laid out in squares so the listener could tell where the ball was at any given announcement. Square one was center field where faceoff's, or the ball toss took place. So back to square one was center field, starting all over in march towards a goal.
