Jim asked a question about New Posts on the Tail Fins and I had to learn how they worked. It's really an alternative way to play catch up on posts you've missed when away from the forum for vacation. On the Home Page when your tail fin says NEW POSTS the system keeps track of every time it counted a new post that you didn't click on the tail fin and go read. Whereas, the right hand column that shows the LAST POST means that this is actually the last post made in this Board as of today. Basically, the system keeps track of you as a member and wants to show you all the posts you may have missed as of today. They do that in case you have been absent for awhile and want to catch up. You may have been visiting the RECENT POSTS every day and actually kept up with everything that has been posted but that doesn't change your tail fin back to normal unless you go to that page with a missed post on it. By the way, when you click on a Board it opens that Board into the Thread page. There are two buttons at the top called SELECT and ACTIONS. Each has its own drop down menu. I won't go into those until later but they are to help you navigate to posts you may have missed while away. How did I figure this out? In the Board What's New on the F-106DeltaDart.com the most active thread at the top of the list is CANDLES. Remember, the last thread someone posted in always rises to the top of the thread list. I kept clicking on my tail fin that said NEW POSTS. Each time it took me to a post that the system knew I had not clicked to read. Then I would do a back arrow and click NEW POSTS again. Then it would take me to the next newest post it thought I had missed. I kept repeating this process until the system knew I had read every post and finally after 13 times my tail fin changed back to normal instead of saying NEW POSTS. Most of us go straight to the RECENT POSTS button but the system doesn't reset tail fins because it doesn't know you saw the NEW POSTS unless you went to that particular Thread page.
The thing that is so good about the RECENT POSTS button is that you can go backward through the pages and see far more than the last 100 posts which used to be the biggest option we had with the old forum v4. I wanted to clear all my NEW POSTS and get all my tail fins back to normal since I'm always here every day reading RECENT POSTS so I selected a board and went to its threads. I clicked SELECT and clicked SELECT ALL. Then I clicked ACTIONS and clicked MARK AS READ. When I went back to the home page my tail fin was now cleared and looked normal. This gives me a new baseline for getting caught up if I want to use it following an absence.
So whether you only look at Recent Posts to get caught up reading or use the New Posts Tail Fin, it's up to you.
