These pictures are very profound. It is fortunate that these photos have survived. Most probably a million wet plate photos were made during the civil war on glass plate.
Popular during the war, they lost their appeal afterwards and so many were sold for the glass. Many used in green houses. Over the years the sun caused the images to disappear.
These are pretty amazing considering they were taken over to 150 years ago: A compendium of photos from era of the War Between the States. Run the cursor over the photograph and the picture caption will pop up.

In my ancestory one family had 4 brothers that faught with the Union Army. Only one brother surived the Civil War. Two were killed at the Battle Of Honey Hill in SC. One died in a POW camp from wounds in battle.

Ron, Thanks for the Civil War pics - they are great!
Gary, What a great keepsake for your family geneology!
It still amazes me how this country was almost torn apart over 150 years ago and yet survived. You have to wonder how the families dealt with over 600,000 killed during that time.
I have a friend who is a Civil War reenactor and has a Masters in Military Strategy (so he can teach when he retires). I can spend hours listening to him talk about battles that took place and how they were won or lost.
I hope to God we never have another era like that in the future.
Pat P.
