The below is an explanation from Ryan Roos one of the senior ProBoards Admininstrators about attachment limits and processes... a lot of this I (most Proboard forum admins) didn't now. So, we really only had 100MB of free storage space in the old forum, although now I know we were at 400+MB actual, and now have 200MB... double allocation, half actual... we will adapt. In the meantime we now have 500MB paid storage. Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to touch on a few things. First I'd like to address something mentioned above*. That V4 gives you 4GB of space. While that's true, it isn't accurate. If every forum used that space we would go out of business. That limit was set as a way for a couple of our larger forums to deal with the amount of attachments that they were dealing with while we prepped v5. Since v4 is limited in how we can modify it we simply turned up the dial for everyone. Many of you will remember that for a long time it was only 100MB limit. The 4GB limit is simply us turning up the limit temporarily during v4.5 while we prepped for v5 to assist these larger forums. I want to make that clear so that no one wonder's why we are offering less space suddenly. We aren't. We're actually increasing it from the normal amount by double. The number you currently see in the admin area of your v4.5 forum is not the real number. I hope that makes sense.
Now, that being said. Here is the planned storage capacities for each category of storage.
Plans and Amounts Free Default Themes - 50MB Plugins - 40plugins/10keys/2superkeys Attachment - 200MB/1MBperfile/3files/10GB Bandwidth
Maximum Amounts Themes - 1GB max Plugins - 200plugins max / 400keys max / 50superkeys max Attachments - Based on plans
I'd like to point out, that the MAX amount that we can even let our servers deal with on a per forum basis (for free) is still only 250MB for themes and attachments(not 4GB like Brian mentioned). You'll notice that Attachments refer to plans. These numbers aren't finalized, however I will tell you that there are currently 7 plans that range all the way up to the following Obsidian Plan 10000MB/40MBperfile/40files/500GB Bandwidth. Now this plan is crazy huge, it's right around ~$75 a month**. Don't worry the smallest paid plan looks like this, Copper Plan 500MB/2MBperfile/5files/25GB Bandwidth and only cost $3 a month. There will be a plan for everyone regardless of your needs. There are 3 different plans for under $10 a month. Don't forget that most of you aren't even hitting the regular v4 limit of 100MB and we're doubling that for the base FREE plan.
Now I know what you're thinking. Ryan you just said that you can't handle every forum having 4GB of attachment space, but that big plan you mentioned has about 10GB. That's true. But here's a few things to consider. First that's not going to be every forum. That's going to be hardly any forum ever. Second, we are charging for that space. We are able to upgrade the server that forum is on. We can put more resources into the server making it possible to accommodate that much space.
I really hope that I've made this clear and answered a few questions. Don't forget you aren't getting only 200MB of attachment space, but 50MB for themes and a ton of space for plugins. In v5 we are doubling the amount of free space you get just for attachments, not counting everything else. We also offer some very cheap plans should you wish to upgrade. You are not losing 4GB of space. As I said that is a temporary number that you are seeing in your admin areas. That being said enjoy all that free space until you upgrade your forum, it's a temporary gift from us. However be aware that at conversion you'll either need to clean up your storage or upgrade your plan if you are exceeding 200MB.
If you have any questions I would be more than happy to answer them. Thank you.
* Brian didn't actually know this stuff. It's not his fault though, he wasn't in all our meetings about this. He was too busy providing you guys with awesome support (and/or he didn't work here yet when certain things were done). ** None of the space or prices I mentioned above are final. We are still building these areas and things are subject to change. I just wanted to give everyone an idea of what is planned.

I'd like too see some suggests about what other photo storage servers to use so we don't use up our storage. Maybe I'm not saying this well enough. Another server that will link to our server and display the photo or whatever. Only free ones!

Don't forget, you can use it for other than posting to forums. photobucket.com/I've said it before (a bunch of times actually.) Yes, it is free. I've used it for years. I haven't counted, but just a quick look-see I would guess I have 1600-1700 photos on there. I'm still using the old version, but have used the current, and it's not that difficult. If ya can get used to the changes here, that would be easy! Just the same, if any of you decide to use Photobucket, and need some help, just give me a holler.

I would recommend it also. It's just a photo storage site that you copy the url link from and paste it in your forum reply. The nice thing about doing it this way is you see the whole photo in the post and not a thumbnail. The forums here will shrink-ti-fit any oversized photo so it fits inside the forum box. Clicking on that photo expands it to original size. You all have seen this before, so should be easy. I've got an old photobucket.com/ account with 2GB free storage space that I haven't used in years. Only have a couple photos on it. I think I was testing it or something. Anyone is welcome to use it if you wish. I'll share the account logon.

I discovered I had started a Flickr account but never uploaded anything. www.flickr.com/ . I like the fact that you can upload pics to it through your browser rather than downloading their software on your PC. They have both free and pay for services available. I like the way it displays a picture page but the website is not very intuitive to use. All the helpful links are at the bottom of the page which is wierd. Suggest you register for a free membership and upload a few pictures to experiment with. My page at Flickr www.flickr.com/photos/13909747@N04/They are like WebShots in that they want you to use their cloud servers to store all the pics on your PC, Smartphone, FaceBook, etc. The selling point is "we automatically back up all your pictures to prevent loss if your PC crashes". While that may be nice, I don't want any software making all my PC files available to a cloud server. All the photo hosting sites seem to be moving to this business model. I also plan to try out PhotoBucket if it has the capability to upload pictures through my browser rather than using their software download. www.flickr.com/photos/13909747@N04/8417496575/xb-70-3 by popperry, on Flickr

I use photobucket for my photos, save for the ones I had already uploaded to mediafire.com I haven't tried to link any photographs on the new forum as of yet.

If you are new to Photobucket, and want to link a photo to the forum be sure to use the link with the word "img" in the brackets [] before and after the link. That will "show" the photo in the post, as opposed to a link one would have to click on to go to the photo. It took me a couple tries to figure that out when I first started using it several years ago, and just wanted to pass that on.
