I guess he was long gone by the time I got there in November of 1969. I don't remember him at all.

what is left at Duluth AFB now? A few years ago we went to an air show there and part of the base was a prison. Is the 148th FIS still there? :thanks

179th Fighter Squadron of the 148th Fighter Wing. Yep, still there. Interesting history of that unit. Went from an FIS/FIG, to a Tac Recon, then back to an FIS/FIG before settling down as a Fighter Squadron. Of course they still do the Air Defense mission, and even keep a detachment down at Tyndall. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/179th_Fighter_SquadronNot as strange as California's 196th Recon Squadron. FIS, TASS, TFS, FS, TRS, RS, ARS, and back to RS!

Wiki got most of it correct but it looks like another unit got mixed in there. The 148th never flew the F-89C, only the J. The unit no longer maintains a Det at Tyndall. In addition to the aircraft listed on Wiki the unit also flew the T-6,29 & 33, B-25 & 26, C-26,47 & 54, and F-94A, B, C.
There is a "Federal Country Club (prison)" occupying most of the barracks area. All of the barracks had to be remodeled (not suitable for prisoners) but good enough for you guys that were stationed there. Cirrus Aircraft has a big facility where the transient ramp was.
Just recently a Contract Maintenance company moved into the Hanger that NWA built for AirBus maint. across the runway east of the F-106 runup pad. There just recently received their first Air Canada AirBus.
Check my other Welcome to Duluth post if you haven't already.

That's why Wiki drives me crazy sometimes -- and I appreciate hearing it from you guys!
BTW, I really need to build my big F-89J model one of these days!
Thanks!

I was assigned to DUluth in November 1967 and stayed until we moved to K.I. Sawyer in 1971. the only officer I remember as a Commander was the fellow we all called "Big Ben" that was Colonel Harold N. Benham. He was an impressive man with silver hair and over 6'6 tall! Barely fit into a "6" cockpit and his plane was 57-230! When he finally left the aairframe was almost condemned due to flight controls that worked so badly! He was a fly it by the seat of your pants guy! Auto pilots was for "SISSY's!"
