Back in early 60's NASA flew a specially modified F-105 to test Down Draft/ sheer winds. They flew out of McGuire for several weeks. But when they called MA-1 out to fix Comm/Nav it was wierd. They didn't have MA-1 Racks and used some Heavy duty Radios/TACAN etc. We just called their Tech Support folks and they had us call Base Ops and get them fo fix. I heard a rumor a couple months later that A/C had crashed when hit my Major Down Draft when landing in thunderstorm.

If you want to see the bird, it's at the Virginia Air & Space Museum in Hampton, Virginia. Unfortunately they have it suspended from the ceiling so you can't get very close. The plane always looked to me like they had done something to stretch the nose a bit. , just seemed longer.

I've got it on the website and maybe it's just the lack of paint and color that makes it look that way. www.f-106deltadart.com/display_572516_hampton.htm
