I was just looking at the home page, thought about the 21st Air Division patch recently added, and wondered about the 22nd, and 27th. The 22nd was eliminated from my consideration as I discovered it was a SAC unit. Easy enough. Ah, but the 27th Air Division was ADC! The 329th FIS "belonged" to the 27th AD while they flew the F-106 (at least for a little while), so we have another MIA folks! www.afhra.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=10080en.wikipedia.org/wiki/27th_Air_DivisionAdditionally, the 78th Fighter Wing at Hamilton was part of the 27th AD up to 1969, so I'm thinking if they (the 78th) controlled the 84th FIS, that would have placed them under the 27th AD as well. Interestingly the Wiki page (I know, I know) even lists the 456th FIS being "attached" to the 27th AD for one day - 18 July 1968. I don't know the source or history on that entry, however. Comments?

Mark, 18 July 1968 was the day that the 456th transferred from Castle AFB, CA to Oxnard AFB, CA and became the 437th FIS for about a month then became the 460th FIS. We were in the 28th AD until sometime in 1966 when we were transferred to the 26th AD. I distinctly remember that the 28th AD had the requirement for the red, white and blue band at the base of the vert stab with the 28th AD decal in it. Col Bill Jackson and I redesigned the tail flash paint as he was getting into his U3-A to fly to an AD meeting. There were two of us left in the paint shop with 16 gray birds coming back from Sacramento Depot and I had just got my 3 level in MARS and had worked a deal with the Chief of Maintenance to go to the MARS shop where 1 guy was working 16 hours a day. We had a lot of paint to spray in very little time. Two years later, we received a letter dated 7 June 1968 from the 26th AD CO to the 456th CO, Lt Col John Charles Marcotte, poking some good natured fun at us for our tenure in the 26th AD. I think after one final day in the 26th AD the 456th was transferred to the 27th AD because of the move to Oxnard. By then I was in Okinawa, Vietnam and Thailand and didn't get to spend time surfing the CA coast with my old 456th buds who were later transferred to Kingsley Field Oregon with the 460th FIS and later to Montana where the National Guard eventually inherited all our aircraft. Turnover was really crazy during 67-68 in the 456th with rotations to SEA coming in and out of the squadron both pilots and enlisted. Man, I wish I could have seen that cartoon that inspired this letter. We had a guy in the C of M office that could draw some great cartoons. It was a strange letter (unless you knew the inside story) and you can see it here on page 10: www.f-106deltadart.com/456fis/patperry-newsletters/456thnewsletter13.pdfPat P.

Thanks for the info Pat P.! I really need to spend some time poking around those 456th FIS newsletters, but just discovered the newsletter link is dead on the 456fis.org. (At least it didn't work for me.) Lot's of great history there nonetheless. And Pat M. -- thank you too! I think we're all set on the Air Divisions!

Thanks Mark, MOW put all the newsletters on the 456th page close to the bottom of the scroll. www.f-106deltadart.com/456fis.htmBack in 2002, MOW had the capability to convert files to PDFs that were viewable and posted our Newsletters on his main site. Over the years we had a lot of guys visit the F-106 main site and got reconnected with us to attend future reunions. So, we never posted the 456th Newsletters on the 456th site. When our 456th MOW, Bob Justus, died our MOW was able to save the 456th website (and Erv Smalley's sites). In Bob's last years his memory was affected by low blood oxygen and he had not made plans to keep the site going. We have found about 30,000 pictures that were no longer connected to the proper pages and many of them had never been posted at all on the 456th site. www.456fis.org/MOW has been working on getting the pages reconnected with the picture files over time and he has made a lot of progress. I don't know how he finds the time to do all that he does and work a full time job for DoD. The man must never sleep! Pat P.
