They have railroads, just not high speed passenger trains yet, although they are working towards it.

"Gold Class" Diner. All meals are included in "Gold Class". Food and selection was excellent. Kangaroo was delicious.
The other long distance train with the same accommodations is "The Ghan" running from Adelaide to Darwin.

Looks like the Ausies know how to make train travel comfortable.
How well does the train ride on the good roadbed they seem to have?
Will you be taking the train back to the East, or flying from Perth?
Just wondering.

Jim, The ride was very smooth, all of the coaches were built in Australia under license from the Budd company that built a lot of the stainless coaches here in the states. Quick rundown on the entire trip, First Class (FFmiles) on Delta Duluth/MSP/LAX/SYD (Lay flat seats on 777-200ER from LAX to SYD)- Qantas 747-400 SYD/PER - Week in the Perth area(timeshare) -Train from PER/SYD - Week in SYD(timeshare) - 14 day cruise on ms Oosterdam around NZ(Marriott points) - return trip from SYD same as westbound. 5 Oct - 7 Nov 2012
