Ernie, nice write-ups! I'd guess the blues on the stripes would probably be kept to the same shades as used to paint the tails for simple ease of logistics, along with a neater "more professional" appearance than the cacophony of color that marked WWI 'Flying Circuses'. IIRC, Lou Drendel recorded the colors as FS15044 Insignia Blue and FS15102 True Blue when he was researching one of his books and some profiles and paintings... I'll see if I can get Norm to chime in with what he remembers from his time as CO.

Hey Timothy, Yes, I'm pretty sure that the 318 used same colors for all of their markings, but I could not pin down the exact color. At the Museum, we used F.S. 15044 (Dk) & F.S. 15200 (Lt) blues on our Six, 15, and the T-Bird - but actually to me that light blue seemed too light. But I have an idea why this may be true. Looking at one of the worn 318th T-Birds at AMARC, I noticed that the dark blue of the "Starburst" formed the entire design. Seems that the 318th painted the entire design on the T-Bird using the Dark Blue color - then masked off the light blue areas - - this would have most certainly darken the light blue a little bit - - I noticed in some of the early 318th Starburst pictures there seemed to be 2 shades of blue used - I'm guessing this might have been caused by a light blue or dark blue the base cote. I have two books covering the 318ths last two William Tells, each book has color profiles of all of the aircraft participating. The author made a error on the color of the Crew stripes (he said they were black, but actually they were blue) with that in mind, he has listed 2 different combinations for the F-106 & the F-15 - He has FS 15044 (Dk) & FS 15200 (Lt) for the Six FS 35042 (Dk) & FS 35466 (Lt) (anther error since the 318th didn't use flat paint on the F-15 starburst). I guess it is reasonable that the 318 change colors but I cant confirm that. We have a T-33 chaff pod that is slightly weathered - I have been meaning to buff a portion of it out and check to see what color it is. I think I'll start a thread asking some of the former corrosion control folks how they actually painted their markings. Attachments:

Very nice! Love the history!
I noticed the photo of 1st Lt Carroll and what looks like TSgt Ramsay. You have the caption as SSgt Ramsay.
That's the only thing I noticed - everything else looks GREAT!!

15044 would have been a logical choice, as it would've probably already been on hand for touch-up on the lettering and insignia assuming they weren't decals. Check out the chart at www.paint4models.com/ , and see if 15102 looks a little more "right" to your eye. (The chart has a weakness, in that it's mainly today's FS595c and doesn't keep a lot of the older colors that got cut through the 595 series.)

Oh yeah Timothy, I'm with ya - FS 15044 was widely available, I'm sure it is the dark color. Since he paint on our Six was oxidized, It wasn't the best sample when I used our FS color chip chart on our Six and T-33 Chaff pod to verify which Light Blue was correct , FS15102 seemed to be the closest of the two.
Our Chaff pod wasn't exposed to the elements as the 459. I'll be heading out to our hangar with some wax to "buff out" pod just to check to see which color seems to be right, but I think FS 15200
