jeep3, I was able to find the article through a very simple search. It is a very good article. Broughton tells it like it is and I think that's what makes him easily read. Thanks for letting us know about the article.

Great article on the Century Series Fighters.
Two things to note:
ONE: The picture of Col. B.
The hat Col. Broughton is wearing in the picture is imitation black lambs wool, and the cap looks like the ones the Turks wear.
Everyone in the 5th was given one.
Mine is in a box someplace.
Did you notice the custom paint job on the Ford?
It cost him a ride in aT-Bird to get the motor pool to put it on.
TWO:
I'm sure Col. B. just had a lapse of his 87 (I think) year-old memory.
The Six originally had round eyes, not tapes.
Jack Broughton is my favorite squadron commander.

Notice the last sentence of the article? Having flown 56 different aircraft, I often get asked to pick a favorite. My reply is a fantasy that, on a night with a few puffy cumulus clouds and a bright full moon, my wife and I roll our highly modified 106B two-seater out of the garage.

Col. Broughton said the same thing in his book, Rupert Red Two.
He absolutely loved the Six, and worked very hard with the Air Force, Convair, congress and even JFK, to improve it.
As told in the book, he was willing to put his life on the line, if it would save the lives of other Six Drivers.
I don't know what he is driving now, but when he got to Minot, he had a Jaguar XK-150, and later got an XK-E Model.
So, having a working B-Model Six in his garage, would be right in character for both of them.

If we are talking about the same "Tom Howell", he is still alive, living near Travis, where he retired from the AF.
He was a SSgt at Minot, when knew him, and a crew chief type.
That was until he was tabbed to head the Seat Shop.
He had A1C Ronald "Pete" Peterson and A2C Ronald "Red" Adams as his crew.
They were the first seat guys we had at Minot, 1963, at least they were the first I knew of.
Before that the crew chief types did the seats.
