Found out this week that my son got a line number for E-5. He's has to wait till Jan to sew it on when he goes over 3.

How things have changed. Back in 1963 when I joined our MA-1 shop had about 75 people. A Chief, no Seniors until 1965, one MSgt, 2 TSsg, 5 SSgt and all had at least 17 years active duty. Through the 60's, because MA-1 was State-side only the e-4/e-5 promotion list was red-lined for most MA-1 troops beause they wanted to promote the war fighters, the crew chiefs who went to VietNam. Thats why WAPS started with a 10% guarantee promotion per career field. I was Sq Airman of Quarter and Year for 1965 and Air Division Technican of the year also in 1965. I was fortunate to get E-4 AIC, under the Exceptional Airman Program. That was an AF level Promotion that the local Division could not red line. I had 40 months in AF when selected and had to wait 2 months to pin on. When 539th disbanded we separated about 30 MA-1 troops as E-3, A2C because of promotion limits imposed by AF leaders. Many of the E-5's were Korean War vets, and all of our senior folks were also Korean War, with some from WWII. Congrats to your son, what career field?
PS, I went from A1C to SSgt. A1C was E-4. It was late 1967 when AF went from Airment Third Class (E-2) and Airman Second Class (E-3) and Airman First Class (E-4) to Airman, Senior Airman and Sgt.
TIS requirements have changed since I retired. Back then you needed 16 years TIS for eligilibity to Chief. Now it's down to 14 years, although I would not expect many at that point just due to requirements and points. Since TIS and TIG both are points makers, it's hard to overcome.

as I remember, I got E4 (A1C), 42250, in just under 3, (1965) and they offered me SSGT, E5, if i re-upped in early '67. I was getting out in June, and it was beginning to hit the fan, so I said no thanks, this just after they gave me a pcs in late '66 which i refused.
I dont remember any of the technicalities, just fixing planes, loading missiles and lumps, and going home on weekends and going "down the shore" during the summer.
Better that it be someone we know, hope he enjoys the stripe and the extra pay.

...Air Division Technican of the year also in 1865. That explains A LOT!! Just kidding! This from a guy who was an E-5 for 20 years!! Yea, really. I made E-5 (Sergeant) in the US Army in 1986, and made E-6 (Technical Sergeant) in the US Air Force in 2006. E-7 (Master Sergeant) came much quicker. 2009.

A young, Airman Berry (left, center) during a red ball on the alert pad!! Sorry! I couldn't resist! Really the "Intrepid" just before the Battle of Seven Pines, 1862. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Army_Balloon_Corps(Plus 1, official "Exalt" for being a good sport!!)

Lorin, I never denied I'm older than dirt. and I'm the guy who blazed the trail to Seaside Heights so all you whippersnappers could debauch those New York bimbi (that's multiple bimbo) down the Jersey Shore. :tailed-devil

Doesn't that just make you "Salt of the Earth". I was just shy of over 5 when I put on E-5. Over the years, I threw out everything uniform-wise except kept one fatigue shirt I wore at William Tell with SSgt stripes and the WT badge. When junior informed me of his promotion I remembered it and pulled it out of the closet to show him. Well he could wear it...but I couldn't come close. He actually liked it better than the camo stuff they wear now. Then he asked if he could have it. I asked what the h__l for and he said he wanted to frame it. I guess that must be approaching "older than dirt" status when they want to put your clothes behind glass and stare at it.

If he's serious, that's a damn fine and proud gesture. Let him have it, he's gonna show it off to all his buds, and look at it all the time. What he's basically saying is
YOU'RE MY HERO, DAD
That's like a permanent hug, Dude.

I had several uncles and one aunt in military during WWII, and an uncle in USAF many years before I joined. But Other than a few cousins who spent their mandantory 2 years of Draft, I was only current generation to stay over 20. But none of my sons, or nephews etc have served. My oldest son was ready to depart for basic when he had an asthma attack and was told, no place in military for you.
So congratulations to you, and your son for continuing a proud tradition.
And Ron, thanks for forging the way to Seaside. I did indeed follow in your footsteps and had a nice 60 Chevy Impala convertable to use in doing so. I remember doing mids, shower and head for beach and sleep a few hours in shade and heading back from beach area to do the next shift. How did we manage on so little sleep? Lorin

A few of us from the Instruments/Electric shop made friends with the Seaside cops. We'd either sleep in the car in the parking lot or use an empty cell. They'd wake us at about 6 or 7, give us coffee and doughnuts. We'd close up a bar at around two, and they'd rather have us there casually than being under arrest from being in a bar fight somewhere. See how considerate we were? I remember recharging under the boardwalk with some of those New YAWK bimbi, didnt need much sleep after being with them. Testosterone levels stayed high for two more days
