While ststioned at Tyndall AFB in late 60's we had two Aircraft assigned to Test Squadron. 795 was the A model, I forget the B. Those two got all sorts of proposed mods and in many cases flew with them. They did look into loading bombs on the six. I remember the dry run tests, never flew but made weights and balances tests and CG tests. Word I got on it was they didn't want the expense of flight testing at Edwards and Eglin. All weapons must undergone extensive tests for release and how they leave aircraft. I remember reading some articles where weapons flew formation with aircraft after release. I always hated to work on 795. It had so many wiring changes and extra switches in cockpit and had minimum documentation. It was the test bed for guns. I saw several variations on them. One configuration had two guns, one under each wing root with fiberglass pods mounted to make them aerodynamic "flush" with airframe. We also put a Computing optical sight on it instead of old 069 fixed sight. Biggest problem with it was size. It blocked a lot of pilots forward vision. With the bigger MMST Radar and the lead computing Optical Sight, wasn't a whole lot of space left.
