When I moved to Minot AFB from Nellis, following the death of my wife, her parents, who lived in Bismarck, set me up with a duplex in Minot and hired a housekeeper/nanny, so I could have my three children with me.
It happened that there was another Scanlon in Minot.
Jerry was a public school music teacher, as well as giving private violin lessons.
One day I came in from the flight line and was told I had a phone message.
It was one of those days when the office was full of troops having coffee and doing nothing jobs.
Don St. Pierre, the Convair Tech Rep, was the one who took the call.
Seems Don did a lot of phone answering.
After I got my coffee and Don got my attention, rather than just handing me a note, he read it, out-loud, in a flight line voice.
“Mr. Scanlon, when you come for practice this evening, will you bring a new “G” string as "LuLu" broke hers”.
Well, you can imagine the reaction to that message.
Yep, I quickly became “G String Scanlon”.
I called the lady and told her she called the wrong Scanlon, and to get hold of Jerry.
Seems she looked in the phone book and saw two J. Scanlons listed and called the first one, me.
The housekeeper, doing her job, gave her my number at the base.
That was a funny day for all of us on the flight line, and, yes, the story spread.
Don was a funny guy, and missed no opportunity to get a laugh.
