Air Force Gets First Female Fighter Wing Commander: Col. Jeannie Leavitt last week took her place in history as the Air Force's first-ever female fighter wing commander, announced service officials. Leavitt, an F-15E pilot with more than 2,500 flight hours in the Strike Eagle, took charge of the 4th Fighter Wing at Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C., during a June 1 ceremony. She succeeded Col. Patrick Doherty, who led the wing since April 2010. "Colonel Leavitt has an innovative spirit, a talent for teamwork, and this will be essential to lead the 4th FW to new heights," said Maj. Gen. Lawrence Wells, 9th Air Force commander, who presided over the change-of-command ceremony. Leavitt previously served at the CIA as an Air Force Chief of Staff fellow. "If you've ever dreamed of being a part of something bigger than yourself, then realize that you have that opportunity now," Leavitt told the wing's airmen upon assuming command. According to Seymour Johnson officials, Leavitt was also the Air Force's first-ever female airman to enter combat training as a fighter pilot and the first female fighter pilot to graduate weapons school. This is the LC who was the first woman to fly in combat. She took on the Air Force for mandating wearing of the ABAYA in Saudi, which probably helped to short stop her career.
This info is from wikipedia. I know of her, as I voted for her in the primary election for replacement to Gabby Giffords seat in the newly created and gerry mandered 8th congressional district here in Southern Arizona
"Martha McSally is a retired United States Air Force Colonel. She was the first American woman to fly in combat since the 1991 lifting of the prohibition of women in combat. McSally is also the first woman to command a USAF fighter squadron, the 354th Fighter Squadron (354 FS) based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. McSally is an A-10 Thunderbolt II pilot.[1] McSally graduated from St. Mary Academy - Bay View and then the United States Air Force Academy in 1988. She earned a Master's degree from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. She earned her wings at Laughlin AFB, Texas and was initially assigned as a First Assignment Instructor Pilot (FAIP) in the T-37. She was selected for Lead-in Fighter Training (LIFT) in 1993, completed the Replacement Training Unit for the A-10 Thunderbolt II, was assigned to an operational A-10 squadron and was deployed to Kuwait in January 1995. During that deployment, she flew combat patrol over Iraq under Operation Southern Watch, enforcing the no-fly zone. In 2000, she reported to Joint Task Force Southwest Asia (JTF-SWA) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for a temporary assignment in support of Operation Southern Watch. In July 2004, she took command of the A-10 equipped 354th Fighter Squadron, and was subsequently deployed to Afghanistan under Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, where she employed weapons in combat for the first time. In 2005, McSally and her squadron were awarded the David C. Shilling Award, given by the Air Force Association for the best aerospace contribution to national defense."
