Tomorrow we are reinstalling our repaired canopy actuator. Just in time for May 19-20 which is "Supersonic Weekend" featuring our F-106 and others for an open-cockpit weekend. Also we have a new event in June at our little museum. It is called Night at the Museum. Should be lots of fun for all. It's all in Santa Rosa, Calif if you're in the neighborhood, stop in and enjoy.

Our new event was a success. We had 10 cockpits open and pilots gave presentations about the aircraft they flew. LtCols Archibald and Pinsky presented the F-106. This picture is of 0086 as I said goodnight. Reminiscent of my flight-line days. Attachments:

Except for the lack of snow, reminds me of many a sunset at Loring.

There are often pictures in my mind that persist. As I left the museum for the night I turned and saw this image that reminded me of the ramp after all the loads were done; after all the birds were all tucked in for the night. Just a momentary snapshot in time. Thanks guys, for the comments. Hope it is evocative to all. Tis a fond remembrance of what we did as youngsters.

I have absolutely no idea of how many times I looked out across the ramp at Sunset, and saw our birds basking in the glow of the orange hued rays of the setting sun.
It was, and is, always an impressive sight.
Thanks for posting that picture.

Hi Shadowgunner, I got a note from the old sarge about the T-shirt that Dean was wearing on open cockpit day at the CAM open cockpit day. The artwork on the shirt is one of Dean's drawings. He takes the drawing to a t -shirt shop and they print it for him. The signs on the stand were made by me, and the flag was painted by Dean. Yes, we are the artists, but Chris, Deans younger Brother, has the Brains, as he teaches Chemistery at Cal Poly-Pomona. Chris is also a veteran, as he served six years in the U S Navy as a Nuclear Power Electricians Mate. Chris served on the USS Long Beach, a nuclear powered Guided Missile Cruiser. They escorted the Carrier Enterprise on a round the world Cruise, and also were stationed in the Gulf during the end of Desert Storm. When the Ship came back from the Gulf, I went to Pearl Harbor, boarded the Ship as part of a "Tiger Cruise", and was on the ship for seven days from Pearl Harbor to San Diego. What an experience. Our open cockpit day was great. We had over 6,000 visitors, and the weather was bearable. This week we are going to have temperatures from 103 to 109. So, enjoy your good weather wherever you are. Old Sarge asks how I am doing. I am doing OK. Just got to hang in there. Thanks for your support. Ralph L. Robledo :god_bless_usa

Thanks for the reply Ralph. Glad you and your family are doing well. I was wondering if Dean's shirt is available or is it a "one-off". It is a great design. Kudos to his skills. One of these days I am going to get back down to Castle to visit you guys. Our Airshow is coming up in August and I'm getting my two birds ready. My Six is coming along nicely. Just started waxing her. We fabbed a simulated TSD and it looks pretty fair. I have fabbed a tailhook; with the final coats of paint going on tomorrow. Thanks for the docs on getting the bay doors open. That project is currently on hold as, the doors have the extra skin on them from the Six gun mod. I am unable to non-destructively gain access to the actuator rod ends. Plan B is to apply air to the back side of the slow open/close valve and try to get them open that way. I won't proceed until after the Airshow. Don't want to risk getting the doors hung and not be able to tow her out to the tarmac. She gets a steady stream of visitors during the Airshow. I'm still doing surface prep on my T-37; in hopes of it getting a fresh paintjob. All else is shaping up. Keep in touch Ralph. Jim Mattison

Hi Jim, Dean's T-shirt is a one of a kind, however, what size do you wear? Dean is in Ohio right now visiting his Grandmother and will be back next week. He lives in Monterey and works for United Express and is trying to get a transfer back to the Modesto Airport. Give me some time and I will see what I can do.. Isn't it nice to be able to fabricate items. I have done a few things in my days. A fabricated tail hook is nice, but if you would like to have a real one, let me know and I will talk to Joe. We also have 1 each F-106 drop tank. Again , let me know and I will talk to Joe. I see that you spent a tour at Misawa AB, Japan. I was in the 21st A&E and worked on the 4th FIS F-102s/MG-10 Radar. Sandy and I spent 3 years there from 60 to 63. Dean, our first born, was born there in 1962. In 2002, Sandy and I took a space -A trip to Japan and spent a week in Kadena and Misawa. That was during the good old days of "Patriot Express", World Airways, MD-11. In 2003, Dean and I took the same trip, but on United Airlines and a Japanese Airline , as It flew right into Misawa, landed, taxied past the Alert Barns, the gates rolled open, and taxied to the Commercial Terminal. We also spent a week there, walking all over, took a walk to B Battery, where we lived off Base, saw the old Base Hospital where Dean was born, and had some good meals at the Club on Base. I guess the old Club burned down or fell down. The Richard Bong Theater is still there. When in August is your Airshow. The weekend of August 10,11,12, I will be in Santa Barbara with my family having a reunion and celebrating Birthday number 77. It is hard to believe that I made it this far. Our parents passed away at ages 69 and 72, so as we all got to that age, we wondered, how much longer. 5 boys and 2 girls, and we have only lost one ,so far. Good talking to you. Keep in touch. :god_bless_usa Ralph :god_bless_usa

I was afraid it was a one-of-a-kind tshirt. But, I wear a size XL.
As far as the real tailhook: I suppose you could always check for me. Regarding the drop tank, Bob Eberle the Sacto Six CC is looking for tanks and pylons (he's on this forum but I don't remember his screename). WE have a pair of pylons WITHOUT the MAU-12 racks (MAU 12s are pretty common racks); but we are not interested in tanks for our bird. Our director prefers it slick; and I'm okay with that.
Seems like there should be a way of getting some of this stuff in the hands of those who need it. I wish we had some sort of clearinghouse we could go to. Like my wife said "too bad there's not a Craigslist for Air Museums".
Our Airshow is August 18-19 in Santa Rosa,Ca.
