(And at least two for thinking! ) MArv Not a knowin when ye started ye illustrious career ana no being sure what political pull ye be a having, I be a thinking ye skipped Amn Basic (A/B), or the more poltically correct Basic Amn......I be a thinkin, me fine friend, tha 2 o the green bottles no be a carrying this ta the end. Being that E-3 is a pay grade an no bein a rank, an believin ye came in when they were still promoting temp. and perm., ye could have been an A/2c with a rank name change to A/1c, which could account for part of this........But, to gain or regain E-3 without judicial / administrative action Another possibility fer the rank ye never held--Ye a bein an A/1c (3 Striper) and made SSgt at the same time they eliminated the politically incorrect A/3c and A/2c ranks, thus bypassing Sgt......Naow I be a needin 2 more 8-)Would ye be a havin a Leprechan a helping ye An ye bein a fine IRISHMAN, ye be above any trickery, Soooooooo I be a having meself a night cap

OK Everyone! Here’s the skinny on why I claim to have made E-3, three times! First time! I was stationed at Lowry AFB in 1967, after coming out of Basic Training as an Amn Third Class (E-2). I was told that by working hard and getting good grades in Tech school, that I stood a chance of getting promoted to Airman Second Class(E-3) early. My First Sgt was Msgt Bean, and the Squadron Commander of the 3435th Student Squadron was 1Lt O’BRIEN. Well I worked hard through my 16 weeks of electronics principles because I was initially going to school as a 99125 Special Electronics career field. Most of the students I was with had some electronics training, but I was the kid off the farm! I was also the only one in the class with only a high school diploma. The others all had 3 years or more of college. It was easy for them! I worked my butt off trying to maintain an 85 average. I did it though! Then when I had finished my Basic Electronics I was looking at the promotion to Airman Second class (E-3). The First Sgt put in the paperwork and I was on the list. I made it! Then the 1st Lt Commander Obrien found out that my career field was no longer taking pipeline students and was closed for anymore basic students. In just two weeks after completing Basic electronics with a 85 average, I was relegated back to E-2 because of the career field closure. Lt Obrien said that was too bad. The original offer of promotion was only good for the 99125 career field. I was given the choice of another career field and I chose the Aircraft Avionics, 322X1A, which at that time was F-106. I chose it only because it was the longest on station, next to the B-52 career fileds which I already knew I did not want anything to do with! Well, I was a little disappointed, but I was going to get to stay at Lowry almost as long as I was originally supposed to. I entered Tech School for the F-106 and after only 2 more months the Air Force changed the requirements for promotion to Airman Second Class (E-3). The Air Force made it an automatic promotion after you had either 4 months TIG as an E-2 or over 6 months Time in Service. I had both! So I was again promoted to Airman Second Class (E-3), this time it was much more permanent! This promotion lasted for about 2 more months when the Air Force then decided to change the name of the rank to Airman First Class (E-3)! This was the #3 promotion to E-3! The E-4 paygrade was changed to Sergeant (E-4). I finally made Sergeant (E-4) on 1 June 1969, with over 26 months time in grade. I felt really good about making E-4 but I was also mindful of many other fine technicians that I worked with that did not ever make E-4. I saw them get out of the Air Force at 4 years with the same 2 stripes (E-3) that they left Lowry AFB with. The only rank/title I never had was as an E-4 Senior Airman. I’m glad I didn’t. It was a real mess trying to work with these “Wanna Be” NCO’s, much like the Army Specialist 4, Spec 5, and Spec 6's I encountered much later in my career. ;D So, there you have it! 3 time promoted to paygrade E-3 without a bust! Once was administrative, second was due to TIG/TIS, 3rd was due to Air Force changing the rank title! Hope you were able to follow! Hope you enjoyed it! MArv
