Ok! Heres # 3! No Cheating on this one! Sorry John, You are already a winner! Have to eliminate you! Standby for the next round though! I have in my possession an item that looks like a brass knurled knob, with a recess in it that is threaded for 1/4 -32. Some of these items had a hole drilled crosswise in them. Some were even made of steel. What is it? What was it used on? Who used them? BONUS! What SHOULD have been attached to the hole? Same as before! A Prize will be awarded to the winner! MArv

I think, they were used to hold in some of the black boxes, maybe comm stuff??? I believe the hole was for safety wire. It's been way too long to remember this stuff. I sit here wracking my brain trying to recall.

I think the knurled knobs are intergrator caging caps that were used to cage the intergrator signals in AFCS boxes. These were used by the FC&M technician commonly referred to as AFCS troops. Without the circuit being interupted when the Assist mode was engaged during ground checks the flight controls would drive to different position in a violent matter. Best guess I can come up with. They weren't needed after the digital AFCS Mod.

Well now! Numbnuts is close!!!! ;D Yes they were used as he described on the early and even later versions of the AFCS system. The 021, 221,321,621 units in the "05" hole were one of the main places those were used. I can remember using them on the 821 unit as well! Though it was not the best solution! BUT!!!! You haven't quite finished with the rest of the explanation! WHO ELSE used them and for what?? What was supposed to be attached to the "hole" drilled through them? Does this bring back some memories for a few others?? Think hard! I have given you all some hints! MArv

OK Everyone!!!! Here is the CORRECT Answer, for ALL of those that I just KNOW have been standing by, holding their breath in anticipation! This little jewel was used quite often by the more experienced MA-1 types. It was used as described by "Numbnuts" on the AFCS units of OLD! We MA-1 weenies used them on Range Rate TEst buttons, on Video Test buttons, and many other test buttons located on several Radar units throughout the MA-1 system. The little "Kludge" was very useful when you did not have a "3 Level" to hold the button down for you. It was supposed to have a "REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT" streamer attached, just to make sure we removed it before the aircraft was launched with it inadvertently still snugged down on something! ;D This had happened several times! I found one or two left behind after a late night maintenance crew got in a hurry to finish the fix and button up the aircraft. Of course "I" would never have done this! This little item caused almost as embarassing a write-up as leaving the 523 unit Attack Display switch in the "UP" position! That happened sometimes as well! Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!
